🌈 On October 3rd, Desi Rainbow friends and families came together in Maryland for an intimate evening of intergenerational discussion and understanding with the acclaimed author Manil Suri (he/him). So much of what Manil shared with us was funny, poignant and beautiful, and the heartwarming stories and conversations shared by everyone who attended contributed towards making the evening very special.

📕Manil talked about his new memoir, A Room in Bombay, which explores how sexuality plays out in Indian families, while delving into the difficult question of how much to prioritize our parents’ happiness over our own. Inspired by over 2,700 letters the author wrote home over three decades, it is ultimately a testament to the abiding, unbreakable bond between a gay son and his mother.

🗣️Manil Suri (he/him) is the author of the memoir, A Room in Bombay, three internationally acclaimed novels, The Death of Vishnu, The Age of Shiva and The City of Devi, and a book on popular mathematics, The Big Bang of Numbers. His work has been longlisted for the Booker Prize, shortlisted for the PEN/Faulkner, Lambda Literary, and PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Awards, and won the McKittrick Prize and the Barnes & Noble Discover Award, among others. He has served as a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and is an emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He lives with his husband in Silver Spring, MD.

🌈Desi Rainbow Parents & Allies is a non-profit organization serving an intergenerational community of South Asian LGBTQ+ folks and their families with support, education and advocacy. We envision a world where diversity of gender and sexuality is affirmed and celebrated by everyone in the Desi Diaspora and beyond! We strive to foster understanding and acceptance among families, with the goal of affirming and celebrating our LGBTQIA+ loved ones.

I’ve been telling people, this podcast is the first project in a long time has felt been an extension of myself. I have been able to explore so many incredible ideas and converse with different people all without relying on my viola. I truly feel like I can be me in the most unapologetic way and share new perspectives with the world.

One of the reasons I wanted to do a podcast, was to explore ideas and have conversations. As much as I love the viola and using that as my voice, I love being able to use my own voice to share with an audience. Fun fact: I love public speaking!

Meet Dr. Rizwan Jagani

Rizwan and I have been surviving rehearsals, taking selfies, and repping viola superiority for 5 years now, since we started our doctoral journeys together. Now, he's performing and teaching across the globe, and has somehow found the time and energy to launch a podcast - @adoctorsnotes_podcast

Please give it a listen and a follow - it's not only for musicians, not only for artists, but for anybody who wants to break away from the expectations that society places upon them while prioritizing their physical and mental health. You won't regret it!
