Not because of who you knew or what you accomplished while you were there, but because of how the room made you feel.

I’ve always been fascinated by the way music can change the energy of a space. One minute, everyone’s in their own world. The next, people are smiling, moving, and connecting with complete strangers.

As a psychiatrist, I know there’s so much more happening in those moments than we realize.

Music engages the parts of our brain involved in emotion, memory, and reward. Shared musical experiences can even strengthen our sense of connection.

𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

I thought about this while DJing as Dr. Vie™ at Speaker Era, surrounded by women who came together to find their voices, share their stories, and support one another.

It reminded me why I love being on both sides of the music, as a psychiatrist who studies the mind and as a DJ who gets to experience these moments firsthand.

Thank you, Steph Dorworth, for inviting me to be part of it. 🤍

My hope is that we start being more intentional about the experiences we create, whether it’s a conference, a corporate gathering, or simply bringing people together.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing people take home isn’t something they learned.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁.

If you’re creating an experience where you want people to feel that kind of connection, I’d love to collaborate!

Okay, who is the ONE artist you would drop everything to see on tour? 👀🎶

And if they’re already touring… have you gotten tickets yet?!

And a loooooong jacket. 🧥🎶

This was one of my favorite songs back in the day, and this remix is giving me LIFE.

You guys already know how much I love music, but I’m also someone who could spend hours watching music videos. So getting to create my own genuinely brings out my inner teenager who probably dreamed of doing exactly this.

And it got me thinking… when did life get so serious that we stopped doing things simply because they bring us joy? Not because they’re productive, because they make sense, or because they’re part of some bigger plan.

Just because they’re FUN.

Consider this your reminder to do more of the things that make you feel like you again. 🤍

If your life had a soundtrack like the main character in a movie, what songs would be playing in the background? 🎧

Music has always been a tool. And you don’t have to be Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, or a world-recognized artist to understand its power.

We all use music.

It's the song you play before a big meeting, the playlist that gets you through a workout, the one you put on when you need to cry, or the song that instantly takes you back to a specific version of yourself.

The difference is learning to use it intentionally.

Music might be one of the most underrated tools we have for supporting our mood.

When you listen to music you love, your brain engages reward and emotion-processing systems. Dopamine pathways can become activated, your autonomic nervous system can shift, and music may help regulate the body’s stress response. Research has also found that music interventions can reduce perceived stress and, in some studies, influence biological stress markers like cortisol.

There’s also growing evidence that music therapy can help reduce depressive symptoms, although the quality of the research varies and it should not be treated as a replacement for professional mental health care.

And this is exactly why I’m so interested in what happens when psychiatry, neuroscience, music, and culture meet. Music doesn’t just sound good. Your brain and body are responding to it.

So yes, turn the music up. Dance. Sing. Build the playlist that changes your state.

Just remember: music can be a powerful tool in your mental wellness toolkit, but this is not a prescription, diagnosis, or medical advice, and it is not a substitute for individualized mental health treatment.

What’s one song that can change your mood almost instantly? 🎶

I’m very particular about what I listen to when I need to focus. 😂

Sometimes I want lo-fi. Sometimes classical. Sometimes I need EDM with no lyrics because silence is somehow more distracting.

As a psychiatrist and DJ, I’m constantly interested in how sound changes the way we experience focus, energy, mood, and even the pace of our thoughts.

So I put together some of my favorite playlists for different kinds of work days, whether you need to lock in, find a flow state, or just make answering emails feel slightly less painful. 🎧

And yes, I have my own playlists in there too.

Save this for your next work session, send it to your friend who can’t function without headphones, and find all of my playlists through the link in my bio.
