💉 Flu Season Real Talk: Fact vs. Fiction

Don't let these common myths keep you from staying protected this season! Here is the breakdown:

❌ Myth 1: The shot gives you the flu.

✅ Fact: Standard shots use killed or recombinant viruses—they cannot cause influenza. Mild soreness or a low fever just means your immune system is doing its job!

❌ Myth 2: "I'm healthy, so I don't need it."

✅ Fact: The flu can hit anyone hard. Getting vaccinated also protects vulnerable community members around you who can't get the shot.

❌ Myth 3: "I got it last year, I'm good."

✅ Fact: Immunity wanes, and circulating strains change every year. An annual update is essential.

❌ Myth 4: "It's not 100% effective, so why bother?"

✅ Fact: Even if you still catch it, the vaccine drastically reduces illness severity, shortening duration and lowering hospitalization risks.

Bacteria and viruses can both make you sick, but they are very different, and understanding the difference helps explain why antibiotics don’t work for every infection.

Bacteria are single-celled organisms that can reproduce independently. Some bacteria cause infections like strep throat and certain ear infections, while others are actually beneficial to our bodies.

Viruses work differently. They invade our cells and use our cells’ machinery to reproduce. Common viral infections include the flu, RSV, COVID-19, and the common cold.

Antibiotics work by targeting specific structures or processes in bacteria. Viruses don’t have those same targets, which is why antibiotics cannot treat viral infections.

Giving antibiotics for a virus won’t help your child recover faster, but it can cause unnecessary side effects and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Understanding the difference between bacterial and viral infections is an important part of knowing when antibiotics are actually needed. #bacterialinfection #viralinfection #virus

Flu can cause high fevers, dehydration, pneumonia, hospitalization, and other serious complications, even in otherwise healthy kids and adults. The flu vaccine may not prevent every case of influenza, but it lowers the risk of getting sick and, importantly, lowers the risk of severe illness if you do get infected.

Flu season is coming. If you’re eligible and haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, now is a good time.

Taking time to move your body, dive into a hobby you love, or simply rest isn’t taking away from others—it’s preparing you to give them the healthiest version of you.

You can’t serve your purpose if you burn out the vessel carrying it.

Kentucky is now reporting 50 measles cases across 10 counties, and the outbreak is continuing to spread.

Measles is extraordinarily contagious, and people can spread it before they even know they’re sick. That’s why waiting until there’s a case at your child’s school or in your community is not the best time to start thinking about protection.

If your child is due for MMR, or you’re an adult who isn’t sure whether you’re protected, check your vaccine record now.

The goal is to already be protected before you’re exposed.

Three numbers everyone should know: 988.

You don’t have to know exactly what to say. You don’t have to decide whether things are “bad enough” before reaching out. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by call, text, or chat for anyone experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis.

Save the number. Share it with your kids. Make sure they know they can use it too.

One case of measles in a classroom can expose a lot of children before anyone even realizes what they’re dealing with. Among people who are not immune, about 9 out of 10 who are exposed can become infected. High vaccination rates don’t just protect individual children. They make it harder for measles to spread and help protect classmates who cannot be vaccinated.

If you’re pregnant and traveling somewhere with an active measles outbreak, it’s understandable to wonder what that means for you.

If you’ve had two doses of MMR, you’re very well protected against measles. Pregnancy doesn’t erase that protection. You should still avoid known exposures and pay attention to public health alerts, because measles during pregnancy can be more serious. #mmr #measles #measlesoutbreak

Every susceptible person in the house eventually gets sick. And when a virus is this contagious, even complications that are relatively uncommon can add up quickly when everyone gets infected. That’s the part of the measles story a sitcom can’t wrap up in 30 minutes. #mmr #measles #measlesoutbreak
