Women supporting women /
.
I’ve been invited to chat to the amazing @donnaida tomorrow. Tune into her Instagram at 2pm to hear us chat about about our journeys as female founders with start up companies. I’ve been a fan of @donnaidadenim for years. Sadly I can’t squeeze into her incredible jumpsuits now but have worn them throughout most of this pregancy! She has always inspired me. Her passion, ability to be forward thinking and pivot with the times is inspirational for all women with their own business or thinking of setting one up. I myself am the founder of @nurissclinics and @decreeskincare and have learnt many lessons over the years. We may even get time to talk about skin/the beauty industry. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow x Dr Anita

Ever have days where you don’t know where to start? 🙈
.
That feeling when you kick off the week with such a long ‘to do’ list that you find it overwhelming.
.
Here are some tips that I’ve developed over the years ...
.

1. Pick your top three priorities right away✅

Do this before you even check your email in the morning. Research shows that prioritising is one of the brain’s most taxing activities, because it has to compare numerous items to each other and then decide. Even checking emails before you do this will negatively impact your ability to prioritise and distract you.

Once you’ve picked your main priorities, list them in order or priority and then get to work. Don’t jump from task to task. Do one item at a time.
.
2. Cross off half the things on your To-Do list✅

Everything that’s on your list is fighting for your mental attention. Your brain is working behind the scenes on every little task – even though you aren’t aware of it. That means it’s bogged down again, which slows your overall productivity.

Worse yet, the things on your To-Do list that you really need to work on are the most likely to not get done. Why? Because you have an overwhelming urge to make a dent in that massive list – to reduce it in size. That means you’ll tackle the easy stuff first, so you feel like you’re making progress.
.

3. Create a ‘done’ list✅

If you’re like me, facing a never-ending To-Do list is so discouraging. It’s not good to get to the end of your day and feel like you’ve accomplished nothing. It’s not true, but that is how I feel. For some odd reason, I think I should be a superhuman and accomplish it all.

Are you GUILTY of facial bias?
.
Why do we live in a society where people judge you based on your appearance, facial features and even your skin condition?
.
An interesting study looked at computer-generated faces to model traits associated with perceived attractiveness, trustworthiness, competence, and more. This study revealed that people have many biases, including halo effects, where we assume one positive trait will be followed by others and stereotypes where we associate behaviours with looks.
.
For example this study demonstrates that more attractive people rate higher in other positive traits too, such as perceiving them as more competent, intelligent and trustworthy. Am I guilty of this?

The study showed that we often associate a ‘baby-faced’ appearance with physical weakness, naïvety, submissiveness but also honestness, kindness and warmth. Baby-faced appearance includes relatively larger eyes, a rounder face, a larger ratio of cranium to chin.

Check out the second image here, which shows how facial manipulation in this study can change how people viewed and perceived the same person.
.
Links between facial morphology and behaviour may simply be the result of societal bias, where people act a certain way because we expect them do, and facial bias just reinforces these stereotypes.
.
Interestingly, people also react more positively to faces that resemble their own. This was tested by having people evaluate the trustworthiness of morphed faces containing varying percentages of their own face.
.
Time for us to step back and reflect upon how we treat others, based on their appearance and stamp out this bias.

Vitamin C is the most googled skincare ingredient of 2020 so far. Here's why you need it and how to use it /
.

Vitamin C has been used in skincare for decades. Like many other skincare staples, it is considered an ‘essential’ nutrient for your skin, regardless of your age, sex and skin type. One of the reasons for this is that our skin actually has receptors in it specifically for Vitamin C. Your skin therefore welcomes this nutrient.

It is a co-factor for important collagen boosting enzymes called prolysyl and lysyl hydroxylase. These enzymes are responsible for stabilising and cross-linking collagen molecules. Vitamin C also stimulates a process called lipid peroxidation. The byproduct of this process is malondialdehyde, which also stimulates collagen gene expression, helping to make healthier, more youthful collagen fibres.

But it doesn’t stop there, this superhero ingredient also directly activates the transcription of collagen synthesis at a DNA level. Let’s also not forget it’s ability to mop up collagen degrading free radicals, produced in our skin when it is exposed to environmental stressors.

The best way to get Vitamin C into your skin is to deliver it in a Cosmeceutical grade serum. Ideally 10-15% stabilised with Ferulic acid and packaged in opaque packaging.
.
I use @decreeskincare Protect Elixir Daily but also a big fan of @officialmedik8 range.

Gleneagles - options for a great staycation.
.
We were supposed to be in Lake Como over bank holiday, to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the hotel where we got married. However, due to COVID restrictions and being pregnant, we felt it wise to go somewhere in the UK instead.
.
I highly recommend this gorgeous hotel @thegleneagleshotel. A mix of glamour, history and elegance, it is perfect for golf fanatics, or for those who simply want a romantic get away. The set up for families is incredible too. Tennis, cycling, golf, shooting, croquet, horse riding, fishing, lawn games, archery, falconry, the list goes on...plus a beautiful spa area and gym. Sadly the latter was closed during our stay.
.
The restaurants offered the very best in terms of customer service and a particular highlight was the @restaurant_andrew_fairlie anniversary dinner, perfect for a special occasion. Very sad to say goodbye and be back in the office today. We will be back to visit with our little one xx

Feeling stressed ... try HITTING SOME BALLS !!!
.
This bank holiday is focussed on switching off from work COMPLETELY /
.
I’ve been so excited to play the Queens Course @thegleneagleshotel today. Massively intimidating, particularly when off the first tee and an audience watching 🙈. Feels so good to take a break and to push myself out of my comfort zone! Also aware that as I get a bigger baby bump my golf days are limited.
.
Have a wonderful bank holiday and use the time to filter out any stress where you can.

Too busy to cook- my solution? Try this! /
.
Clinic days are long and hectic at the moment. With a little one on the way, I am paying more attention to my meals and want to prepare things from scratch. I was introduced to @hellofreshuk and have been so impressed. This is not an ad. I genuinely want to share my feedback.
.
You are able to select your preferences and they give you up to 20 meal suggestions each week. I selected protein and balanced meals as my category and so far I’m impressed.
.
You still have to do some work though!! This lamb dish took me 30 minutes to prepare but it tasted amazing. It gives you the quantities you need for your family size, so reduces wastage too and comes in recyclable packaging. The meat is organic and all of the food is sourced from local farms.
.
Little things to save time and keep my nutrition goals on track...

Master your exfoliation routine /
.

When I first meet my patients I spend time going through their their skincare and one of the common findings is the tendency for people to over exfoliate. I can see why. It would seem logical that when you exfoliate and remove the bad stuff then your skin will look better? This is correct, however, if you over exfoliate your skin can go into meltdown. When you exfoliate you remove old, tired looking skin cells but you also take away some of the good stuff too. The important hydrating lipids that keep your skin barriers strong. If you are using cleaners with exfoliating acids. Exfoliating toners or pads, serums with ingredients such as glycolic acid and also using exfoliative masks, beads, grains, scrubs or brushes you will be obliterating your skin layers
.
My Tips /
.

No exfoliation in the morning - this is when your skin needs to be strong and protect you from the environment (unless your dr advises)
.
Avoid exfoliating toners- they serve no purpose for most skin types.
.

Avoid serums in the morning with lactic acid, glycolic or salicylic acid and retinoids
.

Use a gentle exfoliating cleanser at night time, a mixture of AHAs and BHAs work well
.

Once a week use a more intensive exfoliation mask for a clincial grade at home facial and also ensure you replenish your skin post exfoliation, for example with a product like the one pictured, @decreeskincare Replenishing Paste, a lipid barrier restoring paste.

What is happiness ? /

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognising and appreciating what we do have.”

Thankful for being able to take a few days out of my busy schedule to rest and reflect on all that I am blessed with and the great people around me.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING OUTDOORS AND ‘GREEN’ EXERCISE /
.

Light tends to elevate people's mood and unless you live in a glass house or are using a light box, there's usually more light available outside than in.
Physical activity has been shown to reduce stress and boost mood. Whilst outdoors, we are more likely to be active too. So if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, I highly recommend enjoying this nice weather and getting outside.

Researchers are advancing the notion that exercising in the presence of nature has added benefit, particularly for mental health. Their investigations into "green exercise," as they are calling it, dovetails with research showing benefits from living in proximity to green, open spaces.

.
In one interesting study, meta-analysis showed just five minutes of green exercise resulted in improvements in self-esteem and mood. I will have a dose of that please !
