Life lately 🏡🤰🏻🫶

I feel so lucky and grateful that we were able to buy our first house and get moved in before the bebe arrives. We love it and even though we’ve still got a lot to sort and we may still be sitting on camping chairs but it already feels like home ❤️

I won’t lie, moving in third trimester was tough and I didn’t anticipate how challenging it would be physically, emotionally and mentally. Despite being so happy and excited to be in and for the soon arrival of our baby, there have been many a wobble and that’s ok ❤️

I’m ready for the nesting to commence 🐣

I left academic research after 8 years… and ended up somewhere I didn’t even know existed 🤯

I now work in commercialisation & IP licensing, a research-adjacent role that sits between research and real-world impact 💪

It’s changed how I think about research, careers, and what “impact” actually looks like outside the lab 🧪

🌝 I QUIT MY POST-DOC 🌝

Hello again, long time no speak… I had a lot of figuring out to do!

For those of you who stuck around, thank you and welcome back!!

As some of you know, I went to the US for a research placement last year, and that began the journey of me figuring out whether academic research is actually for me. It turns out it’s probably not, and that’s ok.

I do have a new job that I’m enjoying (more on that later), and I’m learning to remove work or my profession from my identity. It’s a process, but we move 💪

All this to say, I ~think~ I want to start sharing and creating content again, I feel the creative juices flowing, and I’d like to try again!😬

Social media moves very quickly, and after almost a year out of the game, I’m starting to feel like an internet grandma, so please bear with me as I get back into the swing of things 🤪

My trip has started out a bit stressful and has been quite the rollercoaster, but it’s week 4 and I’m slowly getting into things and romanticising my time here at Yale (I still can’t believe I’m here)! 😱

✨What I wore to work as an academic research scientist: mentor meeting edition ✨

Quick fit from last week for a day full of meetings, one of which was meeting a potential mentor so I wanted to look a bit more professional than I usually do 😅

I’ve been on the hunt for a mentor outside of my academic institute and I found someone who I think would be great! We met at a university run event, whilst they’re still an academic they’re in a completely different research area and institute which was exactly what I was looking for. I think it’s great having multiple mentors, I have a few at different career stages within my institute that all offer different perspectives but I really do need someone that doesn’t know all the ins and outs of institute politics to provide objective advice 😅

I think the meeting went well and I think they’re a good fit for me, they gave me lots to think about in terms of my career goals and forging my own path in academia which is scary but exciting 😅😅

🫶 Reintroduction 🫶

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these and I’ve been on and off with social media this past year so I thought I’d reintroduce myself to the new faces around here 😍

I’m Beth, I’m a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Leeds. I work on platelets which are small aggregatory cells in the blood that help us to stop bleeding during injury. I’m interested in how other cells impact platelets in different disease settings 🩸

I spend a lot of time asking for blood donations 🧛‍♀️ and the irony is I’m actually quite squeamish outside of a lab setting 🫠

I finished my PhD in 2022 and it’s been a long road to recovery post-PhD, especially whilst still working in academia. Coupled with the PhD chapter closing and going through some other personal challenges, I found the end of my PhD and transition into a post-doc incredibly difficult. This is something I’m still actively working through 💪

And to push me out of my comfort zone even further, I’m heading to Yale for an 8 week training fellowship this summer 😅

In and around my research I’m involved with the @plateletsociety as a cohost for their podcast Probably Platelets, as well as running their Instagram page! I’m also a STEM ambassador as outreach is incredibly important to me, if you can’t already tell 😉

Outside of my work I enjoy creating content (when I have the capacity), reading cheesy rom coms, watching films (I love films so much to the point I want to know every detail about how they’re made), moving my body in the gym and going out for food 😍

I’ve been a bit lost about what to do with my page since finishing my PhD but I’m slowly coming back with different ideas and playing around with different content styles whilst also looking after my mental health (comparison is real) 🫠
