The changes of pregnancy go beyond the physical.

Pregnancy and postpartum can affect more than how your body feels. Hormonal and emotional changes, along with shifts in how you see and feel in your body, can also shape your sense of identity.

In this clip, Dr. Jaimy talks about why open conversations around pelvic floor health matter, and why knowing that support exists is just the first step. The next is knowing who to turn to and where to find the right care.

You don't have to navigate these changes without support. Asking questions is a meaningful place to start.

Supporting circulation and movement in your body can start before pregnancy.

If you already experience varicose veins before becoming pregnant, it may be worth exploring supportive habits early. While no approach can guarantee that varicose veins won’t develop during pregnancy, there are ways to support your body along the way.

That might include finding movement that feels good, noticing how your daily routine affects your posture if you spend long periods sitting or standing, and exploring complementary care options like acupuncture.

In acupuncture, practitioners often talk about “stagnation” and focus on supporting circulation throughout the body.

Every body is different, and the goal is to understand what may support your needs rather than expect one approach to work for everyone.

A healthy pelvic floor needs to do two things: support and release.

Your pelvic floor works hard throughout pregnancy as your body changes. But during birth, those muscles also need to be able to relax and lengthen to make space for your baby.

In this clip, Dr. Emma Long compares the pelvic floor to a trampoline. It needs to provide support while also being able to lengthen in a controlled way.

That’s why pelvic floor health is about more than strength alone. Learning how to coordinate, relax, and lengthen these muscles is also an important part of preparing for birth.

There’s no shame in experiencing discomfort during pregnancy, and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you.

Some factors that contribute to pregnancy-related discomfort are outside your control, including genetics and the physical demands of your daily routine. If you spend hours on your feet for work, for example, your body may feel the effects.

Understanding these contributing factors isn’t about finding someone or something to blame. It’s about recognizing what your body is managing and identifying where small changes or additional support may help.

You don’t have to navigate these changes without support, and you don’t have to feel guilty about what your body is experiencing.

A C-section doesn’t mean your pelvic floor hasn’t been affected.

Your body goes through significant changes during pregnancy, regardless of your birth experience.

In this clip, Dr. Emma Long explains how pregnancy affects the core and pelvic floor, and why a C-section can add another layer to recovery. The incision involves abdominal muscles and connective tissues, and some people may experience changes in core connection or increased pelvic floor tension afterward.

Even if your symptoms look different after a C-section, your pelvic floor still deserves attention and support.

Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. Understanding how your body is functioning can help you find the right support for your needs.

Pushing during birth is different from your everyday breathing pattern.

Your diaphragm and pelvic floor work together as you breathe. But during the pushing stage of labor, your body needs a different kind of coordination.

In this clip, Dr. Emma Long explains why practicing effective pushing can be helpful before birth. Rather than allowing the pelvic floor to recoil back up as it typically does during an exhale, pushing involves maintaining the length and descent of those tissues while creating pressure.

Understanding how your body moves and practicing these skills ahead of time can help you feel more prepared for labor.

Why are varicose veins and vulvar varicosities more common during pregnancy?

By the end of pregnancy, blood volume can increase by up to 50%. As your body adapts to that increased volume, blood vessels expand, and returning blood from your legs and pelvis to your heart can become more challenging.

Several factors can contribute, including genetics, pressure in the pelvis, your daily activity or work routine, and increasing pressure within the abdominal cavity.

If you’ve experienced varicose veins before pregnancy, you may be more likely to experience them during pregnancy, too.

Understanding what’s happening in your body can help explain why these changes occur and open the door to options that may support comfort and circulation.

Just because a condition doesn’t require surgery doesn’t mean you have to live with the discomfort.

During pregnancy, it can be easy to assume that if something isn’t severe, there’s nothing to be done. But conservative approaches may help reduce symptoms, improve comfort, and sometimes resolve the issue.

The key is understanding what’s contributing to your symptoms and exploring options that support your body. You don’t have to wait until discomfort becomes unbearable to seek help.

Pregnancy-related pain isn’t always as simple as one muscle or one joint.

When trying to understand what’s causing discomfort, it’s important to look at the bigger picture. That means considering how the entire pelvis functions, both internally and externally, along with how the rest of the body, including the rib cage, moves and adapts.

Depending on your needs, support may come from a prenatal chiropractor, pelvic floor physical therapist, or a knowledgeable personal trainer with a strong, adaptable understanding of the body.

Every body adapts differently, so having the right professional who can look beyond a one-size-fits-all approach can make a difference in understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms.

The goal isn’t just to address where you feel pain. It’s to better understand why it’s happening and find the right support for your body.

Tight muscles don’t always need more stretching. Here’s why.

When you experience tightness or discomfort during pregnancy, stretching can feel like the most productive thing to do. But what if that tightness is serving a purpose?

In this clip from The Village Talks, we explore how muscle tension may sometimes help compensate for a joint that lacks stability. If that’s the case, adding more length through repeated stretching may not be the best approach—and could potentially make symptoms worse.

The key is understanding what’s contributing to the tension before deciding how to address it. Not every tight muscle needs to be stretched.

Save this reminder for the next time stretching doesn’t seem to be helping, and share it with an expecting parent who may find it useful.
