Friends of Karen keeps families stable, functioning, and able to cope when life brings them to their knees. The more people who hear about their work, the more children, parents, and siblings they can reach.

That night almost didn’t happen.
New York City was flooding. Of four hundred expected guests, maybe three hundred made it through the storm. Then, right before the appeal, there was a medical emergency. Thank Gd the gentleman is OK. But when it was over, the room felt hollow. The energy was gone.

The auctioneer tried his best to wrangle the room and get the program back, but this wasn’t his group of family and friends to speak to. It was mine. And I felt compelled to stand up and get the night back on track.

I raised my hand and asked the auctioneer to stop. I told him I needed to speak first and address the room.

I shared how this moment came to be. Earlier this year, I went to the resting place of the Lubavitch Rebbe to pray for strength, health, and wisdom. As I left, my dear friend and business partner, Steve Tenedios, called to tell me that Friends of Karen wanted to honor me at this year’s gala. I knew immediately it was an omen: a call to serve.

That night I spoke about what it means to be of service when times are hard. About families facing illness, fear, and financial strain all at once. About the siblings who are often forgotten.

I asked everyone in the room to give uncomfortably, to give until it stirred something inside them. Because when you give from that place, you create a tidal wave of goodness that always finds its way back.

And that’s exactly what happened.
We broke the Friends of Karen fundraising record, over $350,000 raised during the appeal and more than $1 million in total for the evening.

Friends of Karen keeps families stable, functioning, and able to cope through the unthinkable. They serve more than 500 families a year, all at no cost. Their work is sacred.

To everyone who braved the storm that night, my family, my friends, my team, and all who showed up, thank you. Your presence, your generosity, and your faith in this cause carried the night.
