UPDATE: Pending results⏳ Mila is now recovering from multiple nasal biopsies. Fingers crossed for nothing sinister. 🤞🏻
We are overwhelmed with the amount of love and support we have received over the last 24hours. ❤️ It’s safe to say Mila has a lot of people that love her dearly. THANK YOU for everyone that have reached out via social media, messaging and calling. I haven’t replied to anyone as you can imagine it’s been quite the emotionally and physically taxing time. Thank you to the amazing teams at Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics and the PETStock VET team for your professional services. Once again, I am very fortunate for the PETstock family and working with an amazing mobile service. Dr Clint has done many the work ups on Mila. Thank you Dr Albert and Dr Danni for letting me work with you to create the best plan for her. You were so respectful and kind. Mila was in fantastic hands. 🙌🏻

This is what we call a Bulldog puddle 🐶😂❤️ Bulldogs (incl. Frenchies), Bostons and Pugs all have something in common (other than being cute) and it’s called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). Other squished-face/brachycephalic breeds do suffer from BOAS, but those are the top 3 breeds 🐶🐶🐶 As we see a large number of brachycephalics, we have shifted to a focus on client education and ensuring our clients have up-to-date, accurate information and are well informed about their pups especially from an early age. The main clinical signs we always discuss and assess for are snoring, regurgitation, gagging, exercise noise and exercise intolerance/prolonged recovery (there are a few other symptoms too). 👨🏻‍⚕️🐕 The 5 main components of BOAS include 1️⃣ Stenotic nares 2️⃣ Elongated soft palate 3️⃣ Everted laryngeal saccules 4️⃣ Hypoplastic trachea and 5️⃣ Caudal aberrant turbinates. There are other components including enlarged tonsils (sitting out of the crypts), thickened soft palate, enlarged tongues and in severe cases (secondary to these other changes due to the increased negative pressure in the airways); laryngeal collapse (these dogs can asphyxiate and go into non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema 🐶🙅🏻‍♂️ The main discussion we have with owners is early intervention and preventative medicine, rather than reactionary medicine (which usually yields a sub-optimal result long-term). Of the above BOAS components that can be surgically corrected, these include nares, soft palate (shorten +/-thinning), laryngeal saccules (if everted) and tonsillectomy 🩺 We recommend this assessment/surgery at the age of 6-8m for Frenchies and 8-10m for Bulldogs and if you choose to desex your pup, this can be done at the same time 🐶👍🏼 By correcting these airway obstructions/concerns early on, this can slow down (in some cases prevent) the progression of airway problems and improve your pup’s quality of life long-term. Remember, even if your pup doesn’t clinically present early on, it’s about correcting airways now, so they don’t have any concerns when they’re 8+ years of age and can continue to run around like a golden retriever 🐕😊👨🏻‍⚕️

Sadie you are THE most precious little gremlin child I have ever met and we are both so lucky to have found each other. You bring me, and the Sadie Spam Fans, daily happiness and smiles.
