Little voices, big learning! Children respond to music because it makes learning fun, predictable, and engaging.🌟

Wow. It’s been 2 years since AUTUMN (the band) released The Way Your Blood Beats. 🌌🩸🎧 Named for James Baldwin, and released on his 100th birthday. We are a long distance band, with members in Philly, NYC, and Minneapolis, so we don’t get a lot of opportunities to play live. But our live performances of these songs in the last couple of years have been some of my most cherished experiences behind the mic. It’s the greatest honor to be an artist, to sing of freedom, and to sing our way to freedom. Deep bows of gratitude to our producer Merrill Garbus of @tuneyards and to my beloved collaborators @nehemiahluckett and @dreamingwithduns with whom all things are possible. Can’t wait to be back in the studio with yall. 🩷

What happens when following the rules, working hard, and treating people well are no longer enough to protect you from harm?

Dr. Maureen Fleming @dr.maureenfleming grew up believing that good choices led to good outcomes. That belief carried her through school, graduate training, and a career devoted to social justice and mental health. But during her Ph.D. program, the demands placed on her exceeded what her body could sustain.

In this episode of Stories That Stay, Maureen joins Shamm Petros and Dwight Dunston for a conversation about perfectionism, acquired disability, identity-based stress, and the bodily toll of pushing beyond one’s capacity.

“And so much a part of this work is around just slowing down and noticing…when we start to tell our stories, what’s happening for us? Even if those stories took place decades ago, these stories still are in our bodies.” - Dwight Dunston @dreamingwithduns

When Sali Mudawi was six years old, a teacher pulled her aside to apologize for calling her “Medusa” because of her braids.
