Could your wet wipes be doing more harm than good?

Wet wipes may seem like a cleaner, gentler alternative to toilet paper, but frequent use can actually irritate the sensitive skin around the anus.

Many wipes contain preservatives, fragrances, or other ingredients that can trigger contact dermatitis, itching, burning, and inflammation.

Even products labeled “sensitive” or “fragrance-free” aren’t necessarily irritation-free.

For people dealing with hemorrhoids or anal fissures, repeated wiping and exposure to irritating ingredients may make discomfort worse and interfere with healing.

But here’s an important distinction: Wet wipes do not cause herpes or HPV. These infections are caused by viruses, not by wipe ingredients.

A gentler alternative? Rinse with lukewarm water using a bidet, avoid excessive scrubbing, and gently pat the area dry.

Sometimes, simpler hygiene is better for your skin.

So stop douching. This is a show about shame - one of the reasons we douche is because we’re ashamed of what may happen if we don’t. But your natural lining is critical for protection. Your partner should accept all the intimacy that comes with engaging.

Always remember to practice safe sex - with or without douching.
