The Guitar Man

This is the poem I wrote for my dad, Rusty, and read at his funeral this past weekend.

For Dad
Rusty Davis (December 10, 1953 - October 6, 2026)

The guitar man left town today…
He slipped away in the silent light of morning.
Off to the next gig… the next stage…
After all, he was born for performing.

The streets will sure be quieter now.
The bars and honky-tonks never again quite so rockin’.
Yes… even the church pews will know something’s missin’,
with his familiar heartbeat so suddenly stoppin’.

Yes… the guitar man left town today.
And now old men will dream of nights long past,
and wonder how that guitar man made
so many of those little moments last.

The ladies will cry rivers over his leavin’.
And a few will even save secret tears for themselves,
since they knew all along the guitar man’s love
had always belonged to somebody else.

For a while some will be afraid to speak his name too loud.
Instead they’ll gently whisper soft and low,
not sure if they can ever get back to who they were
before the guitar man had to go.

But there will come a day… a different day for all…
when we each move through the hurt of his leavin’.
And smiles, laughter and melodies will shower down from above
and slowly take the place of these storm clouds of grievin’.

The sun will shine brighter and the air, it will sing,
with the sweet echoes of the notes the guitar man brought us.
And we’ll forever understand just how much remains
in the songs that he played and the lessons he taught us.

Yes…

Life will surely move on, as it has from the beginning.
All things must pass… yet the light of the love we share
always finds a way to stay.

But even so, I stand here now
with a heart that is broken.

Because the guitar man
left town today.

This album is the closest access to my whole heart I’ve ever granted. I know you’re not supposed to pick your favorite children… but IF I did….
The living and writing and recording and releasing of this project was the single most painful, terrifying, expansive, collaborative, joyous creative experience of my life. I will be forever grateful for the sacred months I shared with this incredible army of magical creators and this forever snapshot of our moment in time. I would be honored to have your Grammy consideration.

SIP IRELAND
September 2027

I have no doubt that this one is going to be pure magic.

Next September I am taking Songwriters In Paradise to Ireland for what I truly believe is gonna be one of the most special SIPs myself, Lauren & the team have ever put together.

Galway. Dublin. Shannon… and a few beautiful stops in between.

Music, castles, country roads, old Irish pubs, incredible food & drink (lots of Guinness), beautiful hotels, a few pretty special shows… and a whole lotta once in a lifetime time together with some of my favorite people on the planet.

This is gonna be so much more than 3 SIP shows in stunning Irish venues (those will be announced soon)… it’s going to be a full SIP adventure through one of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

We’re now accepting inquiries for a very limited number of VIP & Super VIP packages (who will be with us the entire journey)… and they’re already movin’.

If this sounds like your kinda adventure, DM me or @songwritersinparadise for all the details.

SIP Ireland 2027.

Much Love Guys,
PD

September 2026 trips

Pensacola: Delicious dinner at Pearl & Horn, seeing Leanne Morgan, and quality time with my girls. A HUGE shoutout to the McNamees for opening their home to us when the AC decided to quit in our Airbnb.

Atlanta: Time with the Glisers and some of the Floods, Michael’s first music festival, and ALL the fun that came with it. We saw GoldFord, Turnstile, and Danny Elfman, enjoyed some yummy festival food, and even spotted David Ryan Harris (@drh3) in the crowd, which resulted in a full-on fan girl moment. Before leaving, we explored the Shakerag Arts & Crafts festival.
