What an incredible week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) World Congress!

There’s something incredibly inspiring about exchanging ideas with hair restoration surgeons and experts from around the world who share a passion for advancing the science and art of hair restoration.

From the latest innovations in follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) to emerging medical and nonsurgical treatments for hair loss, the discussions were fascinating! One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of continuing to refine our techniques while staying grounded in evidence-based medicine and thoughtful patient selection. Not every patient with hair loss needs a hair transplant, and knowing when to recommend surgery (and when not to) is just as important as knowing how to perform one.

As a board-certified dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon in Northern California, I’m excited to bring these insights back to my patients and continue building a comprehensive approach to hair restoration that prioritizes long-term results and healthy hair.

And of course, some of the absolute highlights were experiencing the vibrant culture, incredible food, great times with friends from around the world, and infectious energy of Brazil! 🇧🇷

Grateful for the learning, the friendships, and the unforgettable experiences.

We return to different practices, but we’re all working toward the same thing: better care for our patients. 🌎

That’s what I loved about this ISHRS Congress. Reconnecting with Evidence-Based Hair Fellowship colleagues and alumni—many with decades of experience, still eager to learn made me proud to belong to this community.

Dr. Ender from Venezuela became my front-row partner: taking notes, exchanging ideas, and happily sharing my enthusiasm. I loved seeing friends from Australia and Sweden, and meeting fellow South African Dr. Vine, whose practice and accomplishments were inspiring.

Dr. Meena Singh’s lecture on common errors when treating patients with Afro-textured hair was especially valuable. If you know me, you know I’d much rather learn from someone else’s mistakes than make my own! Sharing those lessons takes generosity—and helps patients far beyond our own offices. To me, that’s the essence of the ISHRS.

From conversations with Dr. Shapiro to lectures by Dr. Randa Erfan and Dr. Marie Schambach, the debates, live surgery, and eyebrow cases, there was so much to take home. I’m excited for the podcast, too.

Congratulations to Dr. William Rassman on his Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Sara Wasserbauer on her Golden Follicle Award, and my mentor Dr. Robin Unger on her upcoming presidency. Seeing a woman lead this society is meaningful, especially someone who supports my dedication to our shared patients.

Reuniting with my MedicalHair colleagues from Argentina was another joy—especially Dr. Juan Spagnuolo, whose mentorship has shaped my care, and Dr. Damien Spaniel, whose research I admire. I’m excited for what’s ahead!

Through education, collaboration, and programs like Operation Restore, we put our knowledge into service. Big shoutout to @treatmentroomslondon for their hospitality and energy!! Amazing to see all you both have accomplished! A golden follicle and a heart of gold. 💛 Congratulations to Dr. Sara Wasserbauer @hairsthequestion on the Golden Follicle Award so well deserved! 🏆

Being away from my family is hard. Next year in Japan, I can’t wait to bring my husband and children to share this part of my life. ❤️

I get it, as a cosmetic dermatologist, I’m supposed to care about and want to treat every little imperfection, but the truth is that I don’t.

I have always been an advocate of natural beauty and of course, as a woman myself, I understand the societal pressures that we are all under to look a certain way. I’m not trying to suggest that I don’t also succumb to these standards myself, but I also think that there is a way to carry confidence and to enhance one’s natural beauty without stripping away their uniqueness.

So if you are a woman like me who simply wants to preserve the natural beauty they already have, you’re my kind of person.
