10 years ago, I was accepted into a Pathway to PhD program, dove for the first time on a coral reef in French Polynesia, and my life was forever changed.

A few weeks ago, I wore the rashguard from the program that helped start it all as I led an expedition with the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab to support the Marine Spatial Plan in Barbados. Thank you to Richard Suckoo for believing in this project and helping build an amazing project and expedition team. Thank you, @jonathagiddens, for your immense knowledge, kind spirit, and the many sleepless nights you put toward this project and your overall work with the Lab. Thank you to the crew for navigating the seas flawlessly and keeping us laughing no matter the surge.

Because of that pathways program, I pursued my PhD and conducted most of my dissertation research in Barbados, on the island that supported and built my ancestors. These waters helped me find my calling, and now I hope this expedition and research will help save and support the ecosystems.

These pictures represent the full-circle moment of how one internship can impact a career in science, and I thank Dr. Paul Barber for the opportunity that helped me find my calling and connect even more with the island that helped shape me.

May Dumpy Dump Pt.1

This post and these pictures don’t even represent anything close to the fullness of the love and gratitude I feel towards my family, friends/ framily, “The Guys”, BOK, community… those in attendance and unable to attend. The support and love these past 2 years has propelled me to this point, and my hope and prayer is that it continues to grow stronger through the next phase of my journey.
