I am proud to have taken part in the team that produced Dromcollogher Voices: Stories From the Town and Around ! This book grew out of a series of workshops arranged in cooperation with the @dromcollogher26 Centenary Committee, local writers, and students from Dromcollogher National School, with each group providing stories reflecting on their community and shared history around the 1926 Dromcollogher Cinema fire. As the Digital Content Intern at @fightingwordsireland , I joined the project as the sole graphic designer. I compiled the book cover, developed the visual style, and formatted the text and final edition for print. I really enjoyed giving these personal and local stories a place to be told and supporting them with a visual identity. I was very happy to attend the book launch at Dromcollogher Culture Night as part of the Centenary Commemorative Programme. I would like to thank @fightingwordsireland , @limerickcityandcountycouncil , and @limericklibraries for supporting this book!

I was honoured this morning to unveil the new headstone which has been erected over the grave of Tommie Noonan, at Deliga Cementery along with his great grandnephew of the same name and many of his extended family. Following the unveiling, in Dromcollogher I officially opened the new Memorial Walk for the victims of the Dromcollogher Cinema Fire, together with the Brennan family, who so generously donated the land for this important and lasting memorial. Well done to the community of Dromcollogher and to the Committee of @dromcollogher26 for all their hard work, dedication and perseverance over the last number of years to ensure that the memories and stories of the Dromcollogher 48 are remembered and never forgotten.

Today I hosted the State Commemoration of the Dromcollogher Cinema Fire. One hundred years ago today, forty eight lives were lost. Countless more changed forever. It was a breath-taking loss, especially in such a small, tight knit community. Today was opportunity for those that attended and the members of Dromcollogher community at large, a chance to reflect and remember all of those who passed and all of those who survived burdened with wounds that would never truly heal.

100 Years today since the Cinema Fire in Dromcollogher. Only in later years I remember my grandmother talking about her first cousin Mary (Mar-eye) Larkin (who was also her neighbour and primary school teacher). Mary was in the fire that night and survived but was transported to hospital and, as Nana said, “was never heard about again”. The inability to speak about it permeated. So much so we were told if people from Dromcollogher were going on the train to Dublin in those years and were asked where they were from they’d say ‘Charleville’ so as not be asked about the fire. We found out only recently that Mary died a few short years later from a lung issue in Cork hospital. Nana never mentioned a funeral. The ‘Burning’ had many more and far more tragic stories, and lives that are, I think, important to remember. At the end of a sunny September day 100 years ago there was terrible fire in an Irish town in County Limerick. In all 48 people died that night in a makeshift cinema in Dromcollagher. One of them was my great grandfather Thomas Buckley.. His brother died too with his wife and little girl Bridie, who was only 10. Both men were teachers at local schools- they are buried together in a mass grave in the churchyard. For all the families of those who died, the survivors and those who helped in the rescue effort and the aftermath the memories lived on and the impact has been felt for many years. My grandfather was only 23 at the time. He had left his family home in Ireland by then. He was a quiet, thoughtful man who became a dedicated GP. He even saw his patients on Sundays and never turned anyone away.. he was always very proud of his Irish roots. I remember him singing a funny old song There’s Only One Street in Dromcollogher. As children we loved to hear it and he knew every word but it often brought tears to his eyes. As a child I never knew why. No-one ever spoke of the tragedy that became known as The Burning. Years later when my Mum was very ill she said how important it was that we always remembered them and we finally told their story. This weekend many of the families affected gathered to remember and pay their respects including members of the Buckley family from the US. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in organising this weekend’s events @dromcollogher26 @limerickcityandcountycouncil @irish_government #dromcollogher #TheBurning #limerick #dromcollogherremembers @deptculturecommssport
