This is a picture I created with several women gastroenterologists in New York! A recently posted video (on my IGTV) features each person in this image. Not only are these badass doctors trailblazers in their careers, but they are also amazing people! They have helped inspire many young doctors in their careers and are role models for many of us, including myself! . .. Through this image I wish to highlight two important messages: 1) Our message to our patients during the Covid19 pandemic and 2) The apparent disparity of women in Gastroenterology. . .. I hope this image and message helps to motivate future generations of physicians, especially women, to consider this fulfilling career and end the gender gap! . .. There is a noticeable difference in the numbers of men gastroenterologists compared to women gastroenterologists despite there being a greater representation of women in medicine overall! . .. If we are talking strictly numbers, in medicine alone, a medical school graduating class consisted of 5.5% of women back in the 1960s. Nowadays there is an equal percentage of women to men in medical schools. If anything, there might be even slightly more women in medical schools....BUT despite this, there is still only around 30%-35% of women in GI and even less of us in the sub-specialties, especially advanced endoscopy. How does one account for this? Not only is there an appreciable wage gap (approx 22%), there are also not enough of us in leadership roles in this field! . .. Lastly, in addition to addressing this disparity, I also wanted this image to serve as a reminder that all of us are still here for our patients and we thank them for staying home during this difficult time. NY got hit pretty badly, but every single HCW that contributed has been instrumental and brave in this fight! . .. Hopefully we all return to a slight sense of normalcy soon, so we can finally get this year started. Again, I want to stress to continue social distancing and wearing your masks even as restrictions begin to ease! Be smart and stay healthy! One thing this whole process has taught me is that WE ARE New York strong 💪🏽!
