POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Led by Professor Tim Cavell, our psychology students recently traveled to Florence and Padua for two days of incredible academic exchange and cultural exploration.

In Florence, they connected with Professor Ersilia Menesini at the University of Florence to dive into bullying and cyberbullying research. In Padua, they were hosted by Professors Gianluca Gini and Claudia Marino at the University of Padua, where they met with local Italian students to swap stories about mentoring, student life, and peer support. 🇮🇹✈♥

What a wonderful and memorable experience for our Razorbacks!

Go grab the paper, pour a coffee, and read my latest article in the Aspen Times, inspired by a Speaking of Psychology episode from the American Psychological Association. I linked the episode on the blog for anyone who wants to listen.

This one is about good enough parenting, disappointment, and the reminder that children do not need perfect adults. They need present ones.

There truly aren’t words for what 2023 has brought me. I found acceptance, friendship, and immense pride in our local community. I worked with absolutely incredible artists who were kind enough to trust me with their creative visions. I have been granted opportunities to work with incredible people making big moves in our area.

In 2023, I partnered with @kuaf_music , and released 14 Anvil Sessions. ANVIL FEST was a HUGE success (see you next year!). I’m now working with @ammplifynwa on some seriously cool stuff.

This time last year, I had no idea what was in store - and now, I’m in a similar position. I can’t wait to see what 2024 is like.

Massive thank you to everyone that I was able to work with in 2023. I hope everyone has a great year ❤️

🌟 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 🌟

⭐️ This week’s student spotlight is Melissa Brown!

➡️ Melissa is the lead for the Service Learning program, Lunch Buddy Mentoring. Overseen by Dr. Tim Cavell, mentors visit the schools twice per week and sit with their mentees at the school lunch table. Mentors encourage students to get along better with their peers and serve as great role models for the children of Springdale. We asked Melissa to share a little bit about the program and how it serves the NWA community:

“I serve as the lunch buddy mentor lead. So I coordinate undergraduate students with the public schools in Springdale. We have a couple people from like freshmen all the way to seniors and we coordinate them with third to fifth graders and they meet with them twice a week. We have a couple goals related to enhancing their mentees social reputation or just overall creating a more positive anti-bullying environment.”

“Lunch buddy mentoring is really impactful for our community because connecting undergraduate students who are actively learning about psychology and being able to put them in an environment with a third to fifth grader, is really unique for us. Especially this semester, we're trying to train our mentors to tell these fables rooted in trying to enhance their mentees reputation and their connections that they make in their school environment. And so it's just a really special program that we have.”

👏 THANK YOU Melissa for sharing a little about your Service Learning experience with us!

The Service Learning Team would like to highlight U of A faculty member:

⭐️ Dr. Tim Cavell ⭐️

We asked Dr. Cavell to share a little bit about the Service Learning work he does at The U of A and how it impacts the NWA community:

“I teach both grad and undergrad classes. My graduate course is in psychotherapy, as I'm a clinical psychologist, so I teach graduate students to learn how to do psychotherapy, and I also supervise them. We have a clinic in our basement where people are seen for therapy, and the work is done by the doctoral students under the supervision of faculty like myself. And then for my undergraduate classes, I teach two primarily. One is an advanced seminar and a special topic. I get to pick the topics and what I pick are the things that I study, which are school bullying and youth mentoring. The other is a Service Learning course, which actually combines school bullying and youth mentoring. And it [consists of] college students enrolled in Service Learning who are school-based mentors for kids. Identified as having some difficulties with peers.”

“I think we're still dealing with a lot of mental health issues for children and adolescents. I think schools will probably welcome some support [and] a lot of families would welcome some support. We've had residual effects of Covid. We resumed our lunch buddy mentoring program, after a couple years, I sent an email out to about 20 schools where we had had some prior presence of mentoring and said, do you remember lunch buddy mentoring?
We typically have only had about 25 to 30 mentors in any given semester. So we had to ramp up and we were successful in recruiting about 45 college student mentors. So we are trying to be supportive to families and youth.”

👏 Thank you Dr. Cavell for all of your hard work and dedication to service learning!
