I'm so excited to finally share the release of Safar: Muslim Women's Stories of Travel and Transformation by @sarah_b_malik @hardiegrantbooks

This book was a joy to illustrate! I made full colour illustrations of each of the contributors and loved reading their reflections on the spiritual, personal and political aspects of their travel experiences (scroll through for a peek ➡️).

Link in bio to order a copy for yourself or a loved one.

[Image Description: A yellow tile with a book at the centre. The book is titled 'Safar'. The cover art is an artwork by Amani Haydar with a series of brightly coloured, abstract faces surrounded by paint splashes and geometric patterns.]

How have you experienced internalised racism?

We took to our community members to answer this very question.

Internalised racism can come in many shapes and forms. In the last of this series, our anonymous community member shared their experience as a Black student navigating internalised racism at a private school.

Myths of the model minority are rooted in varying “positive” stereotypes about a minority group. More often than not, members of these same groups will attempt to uphold these stereotypes in an attempt to be the “model minority”.

While it may seem innocent from the outside, playing the path of the docile, assimilated model minority does more harm than good.

These myths are often rooted in harmful stereotypes, erasing the intersections and diversity within our cultures.

It suggests that- as diverse “others”- our belonging is conditional. That we are only celebrated and cherished, so long as we adhere to and maintain our model minority identity.

But our experiences as minorities are diverse, multidimensional and complex. In dismantling the model minority myth- we must acknowledge these differences within our collective experiences.

Systemic racism or institutional racism is when the policies, laws and regulations of institutions/societies are embedded with racism.

This can impact systems of education, media, government, places of employment and more. Combined with social-economic disadvantage and other racial inequalities- it can also reveal itself within the unfair treatment within the justice system and unequal representation in positions of power.

Understanding and acknowledging the ways in which these systems exacerbate discrimination and racism is key to an anti-racist approach.

As Professor Lindon Coombes states:

“When our systems and the dictators of power don't look like the rest of Australia… that system shows that we're not an equal country where everybody has a fair go”
