🌳 A little more shade. A little more play. A lot more place.

A huge thank you to the students from @missouristate and @druryhsa who came out to help us bring our Park(ing) Day builds to life! 💚

These students put their time, creativity, and energy into creating temporary spaces that invite people to pause, gather, play, and experience a place in a different way.

We hope everyone at @ciderdayssgf enjoys a little extra shade and a moment to relax, connect, and enjoy the space around you. ☀️🌿

That’s what Better Block SGF is all about — showing what’s possible when we rethink everyday spaces and work together to create places that are more welcoming, engaging, and connected to the people who use them.

Thank you to everyone who helped us build, create, and imagine what our spaces can be. Better places start with people. 💚

Shout out to @downtownsgf, @springfieldarts, and @foreverlawn_ozarks for giving us a canvas to do our work!

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Award – Professor Bruce E. Moore, AIA, LEED AP

Professor Moore, a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Architecture, is one of the founding faculty members of the Hammons School of Architecture and is in his 40th year at Drury University.

He has coordinated and taught building systems, natural systems, and systems integration content and building design as the sole faculty in this area for the full duration of the program. Fully committed to the success of the school and its alums, he coordinated and designed the initial accreditation evidence display and content for the next three accreditation team visits, and he served as Associate Director of HSA for 17 years and Acting Director of the HSA for two years.

As a licensed architect in Missouri, he has an active practice as an acoustical design consultant, often with architects and firms teamed with his alums, with recognized projects published and awarded locally, regionally, and nationally.

One of the coolest and most overlooked moments in Tulsa’s modern story. In 1949, the Jaycees launched a national competition for a new WWII memorial and headquarters, pushing Tulsa out of its Art Deco past and into a modern future. More than 280 entries came in. The winning scheme was by J. Edward Luders, Hideo Sasaki, and James V. Edsall from the office of Detroit architect Harry A. Morris. Their design was a clean break from the decorative civic buildings Tulsa knew: monolithic concrete, deep overhangs, open structure, and a belief that honesty in form could hold meaning.

Seeing a young Hideo Sasaki in this story is incredible. Long before Harvard and his global influence, he was here helping shape how the building met the land. His firm, now simply Sasaki, still works internationally today.

After the win, the Jaycees appointed Donald Honn, yes, the Honn who later designed Lortondale, as supervising architect in Tulsa. Early in his career, he suddenly found himself guiding a major modern project through construction. He even built his first home a short walk away.

The newspaper trail from 1949 to 1951 shows Tulsa learning modernism in real time: the model displayed at Philbrook, the designers visiting to walk the site, committees debating what a modern memorial should be, even ultra modern furniture making headlines. The building itself was calm, clear, and intentional. No literal symbolism. No theatrics. Just proportion, openness, and restraint.

This project became a bridge between Tulsa’s Deco legacy and the city’s modern future. A turning point where new ideas finally took hold.

It also turned me into a preservationist. They tore down a modern war memorial and replaced it with nothing, then eventually a heavy handed symbolic monument of chain saw art with machine guns. I dug up a yucca from the original site and planted it at my house so I pretend like it still lives. It has now spread into a whole family of plants.

Years ago, Donald Honn’s daughter Sharon sent me a package of his Kodachrome slides. Inside were color photos of the Jaycee building under construction. They are a reminder of the city we can be, and the buildings we should have kept.

HOODS GOODS

I have spent the last 20 years digging into modern design and architecture in Tulsa, and although I never planned on being the guy defending “ugly” buildings, I have found myself smack dab in the middle of the struggle.

Watching exceptional examples of true Tulsa design torn down and replaced with cheap, fake historic stuff that was not local or real, I kept thinking to myself and told my friends who would still listen that if we kept losing the good buildings, people would start thinking the mediocre ones were normal. And living in a city that settles for that sounds sad.

I’ve always felt that architecture should reflect its time and place and that Tulsa is a better place when it can point to exceptional work and say, this is what we are capable of.

Leading up to my appearance on US Modernist Radio on November 24, I am going to share the poetically named HOODS GOODS. Seven of my favorite Tulsa buildings, designs, and objects. No rankings. No categories. Totally subjective, just for fun. Cool things that make Tulsa what it is and push us to stay curious and expect better.
