"In those days anybody got in. It's not like today."

Before law, Judge Dennis Davis applied for medicine, and got in. He says that wasn't down to being a top student. In his words, he wasn't very good at school, he was okay.

He also says his parents never pushed him towards law or medicine. His father, a motor mechanic, just didn't want him to become a motor mechanic. What he studied at university was up to him.

"Why did I become a doctor? Probably because of my grandfather."

Dr Suhayl Essa was raised by his grandparents. His grandfather, Dr Farouk Meer, was an anaesthetist, and even more passionate about human rights than he was about medicine: an anti-apartheid activist who was detained for his beliefs.

"Don't come to me. My stuff is boring. Go see an oral surgeon." 😅

That's what Luvaan Rooyan says one dentist told him when he asked to shadow. It's one of the reasons Dr Yash Naidoo started this podcast: nobody tells you what the job is really like.

Luvaan knew what he wanted. Not a desk or a screen, but people, hands-on work, business meetings and the odd round of golf. Dentistry, in his words, was the perfect combination. He also gives a shout-out to Cape Town's @lexleodrsmile, whose work he finds inspiring.

Who did you shadow before choosing your career? 👇
