Stay Ahead Of The Weather was a two year project that has long lived in the IYKYK category of a very specific era of a burgeoning 4th wave emo scene which I was fortunate enough to be involved in.

Myself and Nick Wakim (of CSTVT) had met in 2009 and immediately formed an airtight creative bond. There was a period between the ending of Twelve Towns and the making of Proper which was some of the most purely magic and natural music making I’d ever experienced. SAOTW fell right in the middle of that. Too aggressive to be IIOI and something we’d imagined curating into a full, standalone band with separate goals and aspirations.

I recruited my friend Matt Jordan who I worked together with at Threadless. I really loved his vibe. Still do. And we immediately gelled personally and creatively. Rounding out the project was our good friend Bobby Markos from Native. Pretty sure he tracked all of his bass parts in 2 takes. A consummate professional. The band represented a perfect microcosm of Chicago house shows of that era. It was really special.

Shortly after the 7” came out Bobby left the band to focus on Native and then entered the obvious choice for bass guitar: Owen Mallon from Noumenon. The final SAOTW form had been achieved.

From there we somehow managed to play a couple handfuls of shows before the project fully fizzled out in the name of us pursuing our primary bands, moving away or getting locked into full time careers.

SAOTW represented the end of adult adolescence. I look back on that band incredibly fondly. A period of time before we all knew exactly what we had and just before the stresses of the “music business” really took hold (2012?). It was innocent and fun and glorious. The tour we had done with CSTVT - our only tour - Was probably the most fun I had ever had on the road. Fantasy tour.

After 15 years, these out of print recorded songs have been collected onto a single LP, remixed and remastered, pressed as test pressings in limited numbers with hand-screen printed jackets. An overdue send off to this blip in the scope of our lives. Presented in IYKYK fashion the way it was meant to be.

Thanks for buying all of the copies. ❤️
