My first bikepacking trip — and definitely not my last. 🏕️🍂

A couple of weeks ago, I headed into the Washington high country to experience the larches firsthand. It was brutal, exhausting, and a lot more work than I expected… but it’s an experience I can’t wait to do again.

I’ve been missing the high-alpine riding I grew up with in Colorado, and this trip was exactly what I needed. Big climbs, incredible views, good company, and the kind of riding that makes all the effort worth it.

Huge thanks to Jenson USA for supplying the camp gear from Big Agnes and Snow Peak, and to Loam Equipment, Pivot Bearings, and Evil Bikes for being part of the adventure. And of course, a massive thanks to @duclosphoto for capturing the trip so well.

Already looking forward to the next one.

In a world where it feels like so much is going wrong, I am so thankful I am in spaces where people are doing the right thing.

I serve on the board of @ecoss_org - a wonderful organization devoted to promoting environmental justice and sustainability in an effort to build immigrant and refugee communities that can shape their environmental futures.

We do this by helping communities connect with each other through nature, foster healing and integrate ancestral knowledge into environmental practices. We also advocate for communities on the frontlines of environmental challenges and climate change impacts-always centering their experience and needs.

As I have been rekindling my love for the outdoors in this past decade of life, I am finding it more important to be interconnected. Just like everything is in nature. The outdoors was once a place I fostered healthy solitude to heal from DEI work burnout. And now it’s becoming a place to move, connect and uplift the communities nature is all tied to. And I have to thank @ecoss_org for helping me manifest that important reflection.

I know I’ve told many of you I love the idea of having my lone cabin in the woods, but given all that’s going on, it’s more important than ever to be connected in community.

So in that spirit, for all you wannabe hermit crabs in the PNW, come hang out with me for a good cause and get connected in the way Mother Nature intended for all of us.

Regarding Wrack:
Honoring an Underappreciated Resource in the Salish Sea Intertidal Zone

During coastal walks with Kathryn in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, I learned to observe nature using her scientific lens while my artist’s eye discovered visual patterns, abstractions, and metaphor. Once I pointed to the seaweed line along the shore and asked Kathryn about it. I was surprised to learn that beach wrack quietly plays a key role in supporting the entire Salish Sea coastal ecosystem.

As I looked closely at the wrack lines, their complexity began to visually mesmerize me. Wrack is strange and beautiful, both when freshly deposited and even as it ages and begins to dessicate. I am drawn to the jewel tones and the way the hue and sheen of seagrass change during low tide to a metallic blue violet. I noticed how the transparency and texture of algae change as it dries out on the beach. I studied the spiky, curving layers and the complicated, interwoven textures, punctuated by shell fragments, smooth round pebbles, and bright red crab shells. To a painter, all of these close-up views flow directly into abstract compositions.

In individual works, we can appreciate the abstract aesthetic beauty of wrack, yet across the collection, we can see differences. We hope these differences will stimulate viewers to ask, “Why?” and to reflect, “I’ve seen these lines of seaweed all my life, but I’ve never really looked at them.” The purpose of these artworks is not to provide answers, but instead to offer a visual and emotional modality for illuminating science and stimulating inquiry into a small but critical part of the natural world. We aim to spark viewers’ curiosity because, as the Salish Sea School states, “Wonder becomes connection, and connection becomes care.”

As the climate changes and significant weather events increase, understanding the dynamic environment will be crucial for decision-makers and the broader community. Water continues to flow, but to where and how? As researchers continue to develop mapping models for the impact of large storms and rising water, communicating these possibilities remains of paramount importance. How can society learn together to adapt to these changes? What does mapping the flow of these ever-changing and complex systems look like during the time of climate crisis?

Regarding Wrack: Honoring an Underappreciated yet Critical Resource in the Salish Sea Intertidal Zone

Beach wrack, produced locally in the Salish Sea, is an aggregation of organic material, including kelp, seagrass, driftwood, algae, and marine animal shells, eggs, and body parts, deposited at high tide on shorelines, often forming a line along the beach. The material that accumulates in the wrack zone links the marine system to the terrestrial system by providing critical resources that form the base of coastal food webs. Scientists and naturalists are concerned about beach wrack due to its essential role in supporting the coastal marine ecosystem, especially considering the effects caused by the changing climate.
