Codex Connection launch is next week! preorder link is in bio 📕🌹

Bildband Berlin and Replika Publishing are proud to present Codex Connection, a group exhibition and a photobook aiming to find connections, recurring themes and shared concerns across different artistic practices. Curated by Youvalle Levy, the exhibition brings together over 60 international artists whose practices focus on photography, books and printmaking. Each participant was invited to make a print 7 cm wide, drawn from recent, ongoing or upcoming projects.

Codex Connection is divided into four chapters: Accrete, Coil, Purge, and Soar, each chapter represents a feeling, or an observation which together forms a fictional narrative running through the exhibition. This structure was developed by Levy as a response to and survey of the artists’ practices, tracing shared gestures and concerns as a way of understanding current movements in contemporary photographic practice.

‘The fundamental concept guiding my work is the idea that every photograph is both a perfect document and a complete fiction. I seek to blur the line between documentary tradition and conceptual practice, taking subjects that are often represented in a documentary style and infusing them with an ambiguity and strangeness that asks the viewer to reconsider their understanding of reality and its relationship to the truth. I use black-and-white photographs to construct an alternate reality that bears an uncanny resemblance to our own, thereby defamiliarizing the everyday and commonplace.‘ Eli Durst

Photographer and educator Eli Durst joins PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf to discuss his photobooks, artistic practice, and the evolving definition of documentary photography. Durst reflects on what it means to push and rethink documentary work today, from image-making to long-term engagement with subjects and place.

Drawing on his experience working with Joel Meyerowitz, Durst also shares how he learned to build a sustainable life as an artist, balancing creative work with family. He discusses the role of mentorship, ongoing learning, and how collaboration with publishers and editors can reshape a project through new perspectives on sequencing and editing.

The conversation also explores the importance of community in documentary practice, and how embedding within a community is often central to the work, sometimes even more than the act of photographing itself.

One of America’s sunnier national convictions is that when people disagree it is useful, even virtuous, for competing sides to make their cases to the public. “The combat of ideas feels intrinsic to the national spirit,” Jay Caspian Kang writes. Debate has a duality; it is simultaneously conciliatory and domineering. We believe we can resolve our differences because we believe that a good new idea can trounce a bad old one.

Eli Durst (@durzt) photographed high school students from Arkansas, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania. These kids travelled to district and national tournaments to debate legislation about Venezuelan oil and the morality of nuclear weapons in space. If you ask them what they love about debate, they will speak about the value of “multiple perspectives,” but other interests will also surface. Mallory Cloud, from Russellville, Arkansas, wants to be a state representative. Carter Nelson, of Palm Beach County said, “I’ve always loved competition in general.” See more at the link in our bio.
