90”x32” Mendocino Triptych - Matte Acrylic and Acrylic Gouache. This was a commission I finished last year that pushed me to paint larger than I ever had before and translate my style at scale. The panels needed to tile in order to be duplicated and wrapped around a cylinder, so the panels can be arranged in varying order, which presented a fun compositional challenge. Thank you to Art Director @draweverywhere_studios for the opportunity and guidance and fellow artist @duttonart (his painting is on slide 5!) for the encouragement. I learned so much from the process: took a camping trip to research the various plant life and coast in Mendocino, the patience and commitment to completing such a large piece, and the opportunity to abstract various elements at such a large scale. The original piece is available for purchase or gallery display.

Sharing some photos from our brief but memorable trip to Kyoto last May. We spent a day with Mike @duttonart! We met at @humhumhug , where Mike introduced us to William, who was touring Japan with his cargo trailer. We also met Sai-san of Humhumhug and a few others. Unfortunately, we only have one group photo from that day. Thanks, Sai-san, for taking the photos and sharing them with us.

After Humhumhug, we headed straight to Kamogawa Delta to meet Mike’s friends, @hiro_gokinjyo and Ai, and do a short plein air session. As you know, plein air painting isn’t really my forte. I easily get distracted by various things. My short attention span and talkativeness can’t handle the silence, but I genuinely enjoyed this experience. It made me crave watercolors again!

We wrapped up the afternoon by cycling along the Kamo River through the back streets to visit @cyclesgrandbois . We reached the shop about an hour before they closed. Thanks again, Harumi-san and Ikuo-san, for welcoming us!

Despite having a camera with me, I only have a few photos from that day. I guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun? Thankfully, @duttonart has documented our adventure. His latest episode of “Pedal & Paint” is now available to watch on YouTube. His channel is worth visiting, promise!! 🙌

It truly felt like the stars aligned that week in Kyoto. We were all there at the same time. It was perfect timing! Thanks again, Mike! ✨

Art and bicycles: a pairing that endures as a catalyst for creativity. To celebrate this connection, we invited the “pedalling painter” Mike Dutton ( @duttonart ) to help curate Field Studies, a series of rides centred around cycling and self-expression.

Under this banner, we take to the trails, ride our bikes, and then put paint to canvas. Any bike will do; all are welcome.

For our inaugural outing, we chose sunny Southern California. Starting at Outside Supply ( @outside.supply.tis ) in Costa Mesa. With a group of about twenty-five we set off for the Newport Bay Nature Preserve, a peaceful idyll perfect for reflection. Paints, brushes, and Field Studies-exclusive Brooks leather palettes were distributed, and the work began.

See the full gallery and read an interview with Mike Dutton via the link in the bio.

This Friday at @outside.supply.tis in Costa Mesa, California, join us with @duttonart for the first instalment of Field Studies, an exploration of cycling and art, slowing down and taking it all in. This time we’re in sunny Southern California for a slow roll with the crew at Outside Supply.

Expect a 30–45 minute ride to a beautiful spot where we’ll sit and paint the scenery, with a little guidance from Mike. Any bike is fine, and we’ll provide the paints. Just bring your curiosity and perhaps a jacket for the sunset.

Our Maine blog series is now complete and published, all available at gatherhear.com/maine 📓

One of the core missions of Gather Hear is to share unique insight into American life - what is it really like to be at a place, meeting people and walking around a town (or running in my case), instead of Googling a place, reading headlines about it, or watching YouTube videos with clickbait titles maximizing drama? How did it FEEL to share music there, sharing time and space with the community?

These blogs are some of my favorite body of work :) Check out also the complete Alaska series
gatherhear.com/alaska
and Louisiana series (the most dramatic one)
gatherhear.com/louisiana

Our urls are very simple to remember 😉

After three intense, beautiful, and humbling years… @lightoftheworldmovie is finally out in theaters. Go see it today!

This project began with a heartfelt vision from the @salvationpoemproject , and was brought to life under the creative leadership of directors @jj_schafer and @tombancroft1. I’ve had the privilege of building and guiding the incredible teams across story, design, editing, post, and scoring—but this was truly a collective labor of love.

It’s the largest project we’ve ever taken on at @epipheo , and I’ve never worked with a more talented, passionate group of artists, editors, musicians, and producers. I’m beyond grateful. We even go to work with the great @lighthousestudiosire !

To everyone who gave their heart to this story—thank you.

Work and life have been busy, but finally took the time to get some work up in the studio. I love being creative. I can’t imagine not creating on a daily basis— but what I’ve learned to appreciate more is all the amazing artists and friends I’ve had the privilege of knowing and meeting along the way. Especially over the last few years as I’ve ventured into film and television. Some of these folks I haven’t even met in person yet— but it feels like I have. Art tends to revolve around liking the things that get created, which yes at the end of the day people make things— but what makes those things interesting and gives you an even deeper appreciation is knowing the incredible and kind people behind them. Now that I finally have these up, I look forward to meeting new friends and getting more of my friends work up around me. In a world where a lot of us work solo in a studio or office for long hours at a time— it is so lovely to look over and be reminded how unalone you truly are in this creative and inspiring world. Here’s to friends and making new ones along the way. ❤️

Back in January, I joined up with @jayna_milan and @duttonart for a cycling and art adventure in the Marin Headlands.

We started at the Tennessee valley trailhead, rode through Sausalito, then up to Hawk Hill. We set up and painted for an hour or two, then continued riding the backroads back to the trailhead.

This piece is framed up, with the original and prints on my website.
Come see them in person at @renegadecraft , in SF this August 2nd and 3rd, from 11-5pm at fort mason center.
