Was entdecken wir dabei? Welche Fragen entstehen?

How can local herbs, shared cooking and a little experimentation bring sustainability into everyday life?

During the “From Waste to Taste: Herbal Waffle Time” workshop, organised as part of our Eco-Quest programme and in collaboration with Soil Social Club, participants explored the edible plants and herbs growing in the garden at Atelier Gardens and experimented with how they could be used in everyday cooking.

Working in small groups, participants prepared vegan waffles. Each group created its own combination of herbs and plants, experimenting with how different ingredients could influence flavour, aroma and texture, while also learning more about their properties and benefits for our bodies.

The workshop brought together gardening, cooking and experimentation, encouraging participants to discover local plants in a practical and creative way. After preparing the waffles, we came together for a shared tasting, combining them with different toppings also created using ingredients from the garden.

Rather than following one fixed recipe, the activity became a space for curiosity, exchange, and discovering how much variety can come from ingredients growing just around us.
A big thank you to Soil Social Club for sharing their knowledge of the garden, plants and flavours with us, and to everyone who joined, experimented, cooked and tasted together.

Saturday, July 4 at the Kompost Festival - a beautiful kind of chaos: dancing on the compost pile, building soil moisture sensors, making biochar, cooking miso soup, observing microbes, painting with earth and composting words, and more.

Big thanks to all the compost nerds who made Saturday what it was!

For four days in early July, the Kompost Festival transformed Tempelhofer Feld and its surroundings into a temporary laboratory for soil care.

More than a festival, it became a meeting place where gardeners, compost practitioners, artists, scientists and activists came together around a deceptively simple question: What can compost teach us?

The festival co-organizers set down with Makery to look back at the Kompost Festival.

"I’m amazed that it worked so well: we didn’t completely blow the budget, and we’re not in jail. So I would call it a success."

The bounty of the garden in late August.

The tomatillos snapped the vine from their combines weight. Had to harvest some of them unripe but the beauty of unripe tomatillo and tomato is the texture that can withstand weeks of slow fermenting. Gonna throw them in a habanero brine spiked with some of @imacocomom amazing garlic shio koji.

Black nightshade filled with color, blueberry sweetness and tomato umami will be perfect for the next kombucha.

Green and red shiso for some infusions to be used for alcohol free beverages. (Some in a new hot sauce.)

The garden is wild and filled with familiar faces. Installing the irrigation system has made a huge impact on how much the garden can sustain. I've been gone a few weeks and it is already a jungle again.

Come by and join our community garden @ateliergardens.berlin

Can healthy soil help cities stay cool?

On July 21st, we teamed up with DYCLE and the Soil Social Club to host our event “Cool Soils for Hot Summers,” at Atelier Gardens. The evening brought together young people to explore how composting, community gardening and healthy soils can contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient cities.

DYCLE team introduced different approaches to composting, including the long-running Terra Preta compost and worm composting. Participants also had the opportunity to take part in the composting process themselves, learning practical techniques while discussing the importance of community-led environmental action.

For those interested in trying Terra Preta composting at home, DYCLE has also made available a free guide on producing Terra Preta from kitchen waste, which can be downloaded here: https://dycle.org/en/downloads.

The second part of the evening focused on cooking and community. Using fresh, seasonal ingredients harvested directly from the garden, we prepared a simple meal together while exchanging ideas and strengthening local communities through shared spaces and collective action.
The event offered much more than practical skills. It created a space for conversation, learning and connection, showing how small local actions can contribute to healthier cities and more sustainable lifestyles.
A big thank you to the Soil Social Club and DYCLE for sharing their knowledge and making this inspiring evening possible, and to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussions, cooking and community spirit.
