@music This Friday: A Zen-like Night of Country, Blues, Folk & Rock w/ #GaryFloyd's Buddha Bros. & Greg Dale San Francisco & Texas music icon Gary Floyd likes to paint with many colors and with The Buddha Brothers he has assembled a group with the musical palette to rock the best of his past and finesse all the other diverse musics he loves. From wistful folk and front porch country blues — with harmonies and melodies a-plenty — to raw blues stomps and borderline psychedelic jams, The Buddha Brothers are a group of friends first who play music with a common vision.
Floyd emerged out of Texas in the early 1980s with political punk rock pioneers, The Dicks, releasing now-legendary albums on SST and Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label. Relocating to San Francisco, Floyd formed Sister Double Happiness in 1986 to deliver a bigger, bluesier and more dynamic sound closer to his ultimate vision. Built on rock, Sister Double Happiness rose to international attention and acclaim amidst the early 90s Grunge movement, the band touring the world, opening for the likes of no less than Nirvana. In addition to recording for important indie labels like Sub Pop, Sister Double Happiness eventually landed on major-label Reprise Records for 1991's Heart & Mind. Over the years Floyd released numerous solo albums of folk and blues rock originals as well as fronting the great and under-appreciated Black Kali Ma which recorded one fine album (three stars in Rolling Stone!) back in 2000.
All of The Buddha Brothers have at one time or another shared stages with Floyd and each brings a distinctive tone-color to his new musical canvas. The line-up includes local guitarist/ singer / songwriting hero Greg Dale, bassist supreme Edgar San Gabriel (who has “played with everyone,” as they say, and was in an earlier incarnation of The Buddha Brothers), respected multi-instrumentalist drummer Chewy Marzolo (King City, Hammers of Misfortune, etc.) and guitarist/singer/songwriter Mark Smotroff (from Bay Area indie band “ing”). Together, The Buddha Brothers are corralling a modern electric folk roots-rock sound with one toe in the past and mind-body in the present-future. @thelostchurch
