Lately I been telling myself I don’t care what it looks like, so long as it’s honest. I’m tryna hold myself to that.

My latest piece •ORI•

Thank you @e.mb.ody for giving me the space and timeee to explore these themes of Paradise. Thank you videographers @gnartnaod89 @malikm_ and photographers @beautyiseverywhereee for all of your hard work capturing these amazing snippets.

The paradise I explored in this piece is the acceptance of feelings exactly as they are, not a forcing to be somewhere else. If you’re going through shit you’re in it, ain’t no point tryna be all positive pretending you not IN the shit you know (which is not to say optimism and faith aren’t also necessitated) but don’t be negligent to your struggle. You can’t change what you don’t face. There’s a honesty to it to accept where you are and a paradise that comes from the surrender of what is and the knowing that you don’t need to be anywhere else!

There’s a cultivation of my Ori, my personal Orisha, my head, right now that is to be deeply honest with my capacity and just to accept what is without tryna change it to something else whether it’s pushing myself to do things I really don’t have the energy for or what have you. ACCEPTANCE, key word fr.

Anyways, that’s what I was working through here,: all the phases of me and making space for their multitudes while aligning towards my purpose. Being honest, fuck what it look like. Eyes deceive.

It has been grounding to be surrounded by and witness a collective of talented queer and trans, some of which my fellow immigrant, artists reimagine a paradise at a time so critical and necessary to who we are and the conditions we live under. We are a loud, proud, resilient, joyful bunch right at the face of our oppression. We challenge the status quo in real life and in our artistic endeavors. I’m proud of us, I love it here, wouldn’t trade it for the world. Flowers to everyone who was part of this amazing production team. Uprooted Year II
First and foremost, @e.mb.ody (Bella & Maddi) you have my love and gratitude in perpetuity. You two stand as one of my greatest examples for how to live a creative life while remaining true to your values. You brought together some of the most talented and inspiring group of people I have ever had the pleasure of collaborating with. Not the meek definition of collaboration that has been reduced to social media accolades (lol). But the challenging, rewarding, and more robust approach that demands we work through our challenges as a collective. That we acknowledge our linked fates and reject fatalism. We understood that optimism marries you to an outcome, but hope gives you an inch on either side to accept the possibility we may be able to influence the outcome (especially when we move as a united front). It is a lonely thing to imagine paradise all on your own. It’s infinitely more meaningful, gratifying, and beautiful to do it TOGETHER. The video on the second slide is a recording from a workshop we held where we communally mapped and opened our portals to paradise. The poem I used for the workshop is from the Muscogee poet, Joy Harjo. We used it as a spring board for our brainstorming session. The last slide is something I wrote up as a reflection of our efforts over the last few months.

You could really feel the love, joy, friendship, and community in this room. ❤️

This is UPROOTED by @e.mb.ody - a night of live music and dance performances at @sctrpc, with all proceeds going to @mitlallinyc, a group supporting our undocumented neighbors.

I got so emotional seeing everyone so enamored and locked into the performances - and just witnessing all the incredible artistry and discipline. It made me want to create.

The final performance is tonight. Grab a friend and go experience it. 🩷🧡💛💚💙💜
