I might be in the minority, but New Year’s Eve is one of my favorite holidays. I don’t do anything glamorous or exciting. Rather, for nearly a decade now, I’ve had a tradition of spending the day in deep reflection. I look through my journals and photos, and back on the year. Through this reflection, each year, I take stock of how I’ve grown, and I determine what I need next, to continue growing. I set an intention for the year, a theme of sorts, summed up in a word or short phrase. I set goals, too, both yearlong and daily ones, and write a page of mantras, quotes, and general wisdom I’d like to keep in mind as I work toward them. And I journal. A lot. I love the act of crossing the threshold from one year to the next, of acknowledging my blessings and successes, recognizing what hasn’t served me, and setting/changing course. It’s a reset and a starting point. An opening of possibility. Everything, good and bad, that has happened belongs in my story. I feel deep gratitude and awe for my being alive for another year.

2023’s word was “slow,” and just about everyone who’s known that has found that a little absurd. It’s a year in which I taught for multiple institutions, got married (twice!), had seemingly countless medical tests, procedures, and a major surgery, moved, and was a PhD student. So not uneventful! But those things would not have been possible if I hadn’t learned to slow down in my daily life, to rest instead of filling up every moment. I’ve said no more than I ever have this year, and it felt great! 2023 was one of the best years of my life, not because it was easy, but because, for the first time in so long, I really lived it. After years of pain, I felt myself returning to the world, to the person I was. Not quite the same. But I’m learning to love where I’m at, who I am, what is. I’m so grateful. A good year. A necessary year. Now onward. 🤍

What luck! The day after receiving our American wedding video, we woke up to find our Tunisian one waiting for us! 🥹 I am grateful beyond words to my father and Tata Samia who planned the entire wedding for us—it was perfect in every way, everything I could have dreamed. I am so, so lucky. My family is everything to me, and it was one of the greatest joys in my life to celebrate with them. I’m so grateful, too, that my bestie of 20+ years, Elissa, was able to come to Tunisia for the first time to join us! Love you all so much! ❤️🤍🪬🧿

Thank you to our photographer/videographer @abdeslemtrabelsi for capturing this night so beautifully! 🤍
