Walking down memory lane…

I saved every single issue of Martha Stewart Living @marthastewart — a true archive of creativity, beauty, and inspiration. Working there was one of the most special times in my life. I’m forever grateful to Martha @marthastewart48 and the incredibly talented team I had the honor to work alongside. What an amazing era to have been a part of — and to have lived it firsthand!

In the late 1970s through the 80s and 90s, my concentration was on my personal photography. I was able to make a living selling prints through the galleries that represented my work across the country. I had an artist’s residency @petersvalley in northwestern NJ that enabled me to concentrate on the my development but as the residency was coming to an end a recession shut many galleries, I began printing for a few photographers and photographer’s estates, including, Horst, Michael Disfarmer, and George Hoyningen Huene. Working with Horst showed me that a photographer could be paid to make photographs without selling their soul. Armed with a very heavy portfolio of black and white silver prints my wife, @arlocations, began tirelessly hoofing the work around NY. She nabbed some small editorial work and then took a call from Conrans - Habitat, a design forward furniture retailer. The catalog and ads (which ran in every major publication along with a credit) were seen by multitalented @doylepartners and @gaeltowey. I met with three staffers who were leading this relatively unknown caterer and her magazine. I showed my black and white work and walked out with five assignments beginning with the first issue in 1990. The magazine changed what magazines would look like. It was visually driven and stunningly designed.

The staff of MSLO eventually grew to over 600. I have had many decades long relationships with clients and magazine but none as long as MSLO. I collaborated with some of the best designers, stylists, writers, and editors working. We were all friends. I owe much to @doylepartners , @towey_nytmag , #isoldemotley and to @marthastewart48 , herself. The craft of photography I’d spent decades trying to master was mirrored in every aspect of the publication in content and design. As a confessional aside, it was @eapike1 and I who filled Martha’s precious Westport living room with fog for lighting drama in one image. We were terrified at what might happen if anyone saw us, but I think there must be a statute of limitations so...Thank you MS, Stephen, Gael et al.....#interiordesign #photography #marthastewart
