Sharing and archiving some highlights from @urban_soils 11th Annual Urban Soils Symposium titled Soils Building Health this past weekend: Touring the composting infrastructure and urban farming practices pioneered by Earth Matter NY. @earthmatterny The Soil Microbiome DNA Extraction Workshop led by Diedre Brown (a PhD candidate at NYU Tandon) and Sophia Barbaria. At the end of the Earth Matter tour, we received a bag of compost to take home 🪏 Several piles of compost have their own appropriate names. Learned about how to make healthy compost by introducing and maintaining a certain level of heat in order to kill bacteria introduced from elements in the recycling ♻️ process on Governors Island. Happily surprised by the use of an electric air blower. The same tool used for bounce houses. Deidre Brown and Sophia Barbaria provided participants with a take home guide listing the initial steps for for extracting 🧬 DNA from soil samples. Filtering soil with a special mixture. The liquid that drips into the container 🫙 holds the DNA 🧬 Another solution is added and by flicking with a stick you can see what are strands of DNA 🧬 If you live in NYC you can volunteer with @earthmatterny Oh yeah chickens are important contributors for not only protein but for developing healthy compost. She’s very handsome 🌟 🐔 💩

Tomorrow is our final open studio at the @lmcc_nyc art center on Governor’s Island. It has been such a blessing to have this time and space the past 8 months to work in this rlly special spot, and to get to know Gov. Island. I am releasing a limited edition cassette album tomorrow called “Variations on Motivational States,” featuring two brand new compositions that are the product of field work at @earthmatterny compost operation and lavender field and elsewhere on the island. The title takes its inspiration from a passage in a 1999 entomology publication by Burt Hölldobler, where he suggests that entomologists are well aware of the existence of motivational/emotional states of insects, yet hesitant to investigate them. 🎤 I will also have documentation from my collaboration with @daryawarner of 3d clay sound sculptures of ant soundwaves from brazil and NY made on a printer of her own design, “Material Formiphony,” as well as a listening situation for the new Gov Isl works. 🔊 While you are there, you will get to experience the work of my really wonderful cohort community at the LMCC. The event is 12-5 pm Sat 10/17. 🎤 Thank you to @lmcc_nyc @earthmatterny for inviting, welcoming and supporting me/my work on GI. 🗽

Our grant partner, @earthmatterny (EMNY), closed out Climate Week with a beautiful Lavender Soirée at its Lavender Field on Governors Island. A beautiful evening of lavender harvesting, sachet-making, and celebrating EMNY’s “black gold.” It was the perfect sunset-filled finale with our own Gary Levine in attendance! #2026ClimateWeekNYC #Community #Lavender #GovernorsIsland #Compost

Another magical day in the life of @coral.projects and thus eco-artist! Plus my young fluffy assistant Holi! Super thanks to @rotem_rusak for sharing her curiosity and thoughts on our eco-friendly & ocean-friendly sculptures on view now with the seahorses and pipefish. I’ll post more shots soon. In the meantime, save the date October 28 3pm to 6pm when we release all our Hudson River friends who came to visit the lab of Rey season back into the river. Art heals, like practically! It’s magic, practical magic! 🌊😂😇🌟❤️‍🩹🥰 #ecoartist #ecoart #sustainability #pier40 #gogreen

This #nycclimateweek we're shouting out the community composters dedicated to making sure no one falls behind in the race to meet climate goals 🚴‍♀️ One of the 45+ NYC-based members of our Community Composter Coalition, @earthmatterny has been doing the dirty work of resource recovery and soilbuilding for 18 years. Their team is dedicated to encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. 🌱In 2025, Earth Matter received the @ilsr_org Composting for Community Grant to micro-haul food scraps by bike from Lower Manhattan nonprofits ineligible for municipal composting to their Governor's Island site.
