Hey Guys,

I hope you are well and having a good week.

I would like to share this Artist Residency update with you all - from April 2026

I certainly have a task on my hands. Not only am I exploring creative possibilities with bricks that date back to the 1970’s/80’s. I am also going to be constructing new forms out of bricks from the 1860’s - these aren’t simply building materials; they have a past, a sense of place and their own physical character.

Now comes the interesting part: What can I create from them?

I’m really looking forward to updating you with my progress and developments. I hope you will be able to join me on this exciting journey.

Much Love

Chris ❤️🙏🏻😊

The Allen Gallery opened its doors in 1963. It is, however, undergoing a big transformation. It is being renovated, so it can become a more visually, interesting, and exciting ceramic museum and gallery.

I have been given the chance to create and build some new artworks using the original building materials from the gallery. I aim to keep the existing identity and raw aesthetics of each material, but will just add a contemporary twist. It is a pleasure working alongside the Project Curator & Community Programme Manager, The Allen Gallery Team, and the construction site team where I am sourcing some really historic materials to work & play with.

A special mention and thank you goes to the @allengalleryhct @thecurtismuseum @heritagefunduk @hantsculture @altontowncouncil @easthantsdc for this wonderful opportunity.

I have managed to pick up some interesting materials some pre-used as well as a few materials that have a connection to the gallery. For example, the electrical box, which I’m yet to discover its previous use but I’m pretty confident I can transform it into something interesting.

I’m really looking forward to updating you with my progress and developments. I hope you will be able to join me on this exciting journey.

Once a familiar sight on the counter of a Victorian tobacconist, this jar held Bird’s Eye tobacco - named for the tiny pale dots left by the tobacco stems when the leaf was sliced.

Made by J. Stiff & Sons of Lambeth, it is a small object with a surprisingly big story: from Victorian smoking habits and life at sea to the changing attitudes towards tobacco that have transformed our everyday lives.

Pop into the Curtis Museum this month to see this curious ceramic up close and discover the story behind it.

Each month we are highlighting objects from the Allen Gallery and displaying them in the Curtis Museum. This is part of the activity programme for the Rediscovering the Allen Gallery project and is made possible thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, East Hampshire District Council, Arts Council England, and Alton Town Council.

I’m so EXCITED to share this amazing news with you all!……

I am delighted to have been awarded an Artist-In-Residency with The Allen Gallery in connection with the Curtis Museum, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hampshire Cultural Trust, Alton Town Council & East Hampshire District Council.

I have been working towards this residency over the last few months and it will continue until summer 2027.

The Allen Gallery opened its doors in 1963. It is, however, undergoing a big transformation. It is being renovated, so it can become a more visually interesting, and exciting ceramic museum and gallery.

This is where I come in - I have been given the chance to create and build some new artworks using the original building materials from the gallery. I aim to keep the existing identity and raw aesthetics of each material, but will just add a contemporary twist. It is a pleasure working alongside the Project Curator & Community Programme Manager, The Allen Gallery Team, and the construction site team where I am sourcing some really historic materials to work & play with.

This isn’t just a time for creating and building, but a time to really dive into the rich history of the gallery - a place which I know so well.

I will be presenting a selection of artworks made on this residency where some might find their way into the galleries collection.

I have already got stuck in and I’m looking forward to updating you all with what I have already worked on and currently developing. I will have a section in my newsletter that will give my subscribers/Chris Horner Artist Members the opportunity to meet up with me, so I can personally show the developments. So, If you have not yet subscribed to my newsletter then click the link in my Bio to sign up. I would love to have you on board my creative journey.

A special mention and thank you goes to the @allengalleryhct @thecurtismuseum @heritagefunduk @hantsculture @altontowncouncil @easthantsdc for this wonderful opportunity!

Much Love
