I really let tomato season fly by me last year, so I've been thinking about tomatoes a lot this past week.

Savory, plump, you get that explosion of flavor in every bite, a perfect balance of sweet and umami growing right off the vine. You can do so much with it, from the classic southern tomato, mayo, salt and pepper sandwich that your grandmama made ya, maybe some caprese, gazpacho, or even something a little more intricate like this tomato ceviche I got going here, it's soaking in a leche de tigre made of tomato water & aji amarillo, some seasonal stone fruit and a lil bit of the salsa macha to give it some bite.

I'm gonna be serving this ceviche and some other fun tomato focused dishes all over Memphis this tomato season, but if you want to be first in line to try it swing by Cxffeeblack this Friday July 17th from 11am to 5pm

I'm also working on some fun dishes for Memphis' inaugural tomato festival coming up this August, and this is one I'm particularly excited about, along with our famous spin on the classic tomato Sammy, so get ready for a LOT of tomato based content from me over the next month or so.

Yall REALLY don't wanna sleep on our upcoming collab dinner with @_kulachakula

For our second course we'll be doing a fun spin on a Kenyan classic, Ndengu!

It's a dish of legumes and aromatics cooked into a tender spread gently spiced with a Kenyan curry masala, typically served with cilantro and Kenyan chapati.

We've taken a little inspo from Mexican tostadas by combining a crispy/crunchy fried chapati with the refried bean-like ndengu, folding the chapati over before frying to mimic how the flatbread is often served.

We're also in the lab this weekend with @sy.dni figuring out some creative spins on classic Kenyan beverages like dawas and chai using tea grown by our very own chef @_bemugi 's family in Kenya!

hey fam, we've finally got a rain date for our tasting menu dinner with chef becky githinji of @_kulachakula

this dinner is a particularly special one for us as kenyan food has been a big influence on chef kale's cooking since they spent a couple months in kenya studying the cuisine back in 2019

for this tasting menu we'll be doing some artistically plated takes on classics like kenyan samosa, nyama choma with sukuma wiki/ugali, and mandazi, as well as a fun spin on ndengu, a curried lentil dish commonly served with a flaky crispy chapati, and samaki, a seared fish dish served over rice

we'll also have some creative beverage pairings by @sy.dni & @cxffeeblack

the dinner series at cxffeeblack has been the most fun we have had as a collective and we are so jazzed to share another night of food, drink, music, art, and culture with all you beautiful folks in our community

We had such an amazing weekend! From helping out with the @tnimmigrant / @vecindarios901 tamal making party in our fellowship hall to hosting some of the best chefs and bands in the city to raise money for our food justice efforts!

Thanks especially to @the__gastronaught, @chino_cappucino, @chefkalecarmon for holding down the fort and keeping the soup flowing all night!

And shout-out to the ever-generous @bain.bbq for donating two whole pork shoulders for us to use at the tamal making party! 🙏🐽

We are so excited to partner with a handful of the best chefs and musicians in the city to bring folks together over community, music, and delicious soup to benefit our food justice efforts in Midtown Memphis.

In the wake of a large amount of federal funding cuts to food assistance programs we are growing increasingly reliant on community support in regards to both financial and material donations, and we have been so touched at the response we have received from y'all!

We'll be hosting the event in the sanctuary at 1000 S. Cooper, enter through the front door and park in our south lot

Tickets are at the link in our bio. If you can't make it to the event and want to donate directly to our food justice efforts, there's a link to that too.

we have got a very special dinner planned for you this week in collaboration with @cxffeeblack and chefs @wheresteveat_now and @chefkalecarmon to celebrate black history month by exploring the connections between the cuisine of chef steve's gullah geechee heritage and the cuisine of memphis

if you have never had the opportunity to try gullah geechee cuisine, you are in for an amazing experience. gullah geechee is the oldest continuously practiced black cuisine in the united states, and the closest to the west african roots of many southern us cuisines

the 5 courses will include an oyster perloo served as an amuse bouche in the shell, a collard greens croquette, and gullah conch stew. the entree will be either a half cornish hen or whole fish barbecued in a honey gold sauce and served over a crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside fried grit cake. for dessert steve and his wife are making some classic sweet potato pone and we're serving it with allspice custard and pecans

we're only doing 20 seats for this dinner, so grab your tickets while we've still got em!

y'all get ready for one of our longest running traditions!

if you're new 'round here southerners have had a habit of getting together on new years day to eat black eyed peas, greens, and cornbread for hundreds of years, the practice is known to date back to west africa

black eyed peas are eaten for good luck in the new year, greens are eaten for wealth, and corn bread is eaten for prosperity. my memaw used to say the more you eat the better the year is for you, so I promise we won't judge if you get yourself 2 or 3 🤣

plates are 13 each, and just like the last few years we'll be distributing plates to our unhoused or impoverished neighbors, so if you're feeling generous you can buy a plate for 9

we're also gonna try something fun this year, if you wanna get your plate as a sandwich, we are doing a melt with the peas, the greens, and a lil chow chow to brighten it up

this is a really special event for us that weaves family tradition, food, and community together. new years day last year was actually the first popup we did in the new @cxffeeblack space and it has been a massive honor and privilege being here to see it go from a blank slate to one of the coolest environments in the whole city. if you ain't been in you owe it to yourself to experience it first hand and try some of the best coffee you will ever taste in your life from some of the nicest most genuine folks you will ever meet
