The impact of PATCHES reaches far beyond the children we care for.

We had the pleasure of welcoming COTA students from Keiser University to our Florida City center to observe our therapy department in action and participate in an in-service on specialized wheelchairs and equipment.

Experiences like these offer future therapists a firsthand look at the unique needs of children with complex medical conditions and the important role therapy plays in their lives.

We’re honored to help shape the next generation of healthcare workers through firsthand experiences with the children we serve.

Today I spent the day as a Lab Assistant at Moravian University, shadowing Dr. B. We had students rotate through stations in the ADL lab and the nursing simulation lab.

👉 Bathroom

In this setup we had a 3-in-1 commode and a tub transfer bench. A thigh lifter would be helpful here too if the patient needed assistance lifting their legs into the tub and a sliding tub bench would be a great alternative if the patient has less core control to assist in the transfer. Some items I brought for this station were the @toothbrushpillow @equipmeot bendable lotion applicator, and @bystorm.beauty adaptive makeup tools as they have multiple uses for creating a better grasp, and the @mobilitytowel

👉 Kitchen

We explored various tools in a full model kitchen and how fatigue, appearance, and cleanliness impact why we use certain items. For example, using a rolling stool or a rollator in the kitchen can help navigate smaller spaces and can be used as a tray if not sitting down. I brought with me two drawer pulls and the EaZyHold universal cuff. The TotChop would be a great addition as it is a cutting board, a rocker knife, and a plate guard all in one.

From the students I learned the difference between low- and high-tech AT, the seven core principles of universal design, and the difference between grip and grasp. I observed, listened, and provided real life examples of how a disabled person navigates their home and completes activities of daily life.

Giving my dominant arm a break 🩷

I love simple tools that allow my partial left hand to do tasks so my right hand doesn’t have to do so much!

This is the first time I’ve seen Evelyn intentionally paint by herself. Not an accidental slip or dystonia kicking in. She understood the activity and repeated this movement numerous times (even to show her dad).

Evelyn’s using the @eazyhold strap so that she can stay holding onto the paintbrush and a rolled up muslin under her elbow to raise her arm a bit.

I hadn’t really tried this set up before so I do wonder if she could have done this before. Sometimes it’s about facilitating a movement to allow it to happen. Either way I’m so proud of Ev’s and how hard she works. She also used her head turn for “yes” and “no” so much the afternoon which was amazing.
