october book club information ✨ we’re reading THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF FIRST LADY FREEMAN by the incredibly talented @deeshaphilyaw 💚

This resounding debut novel introduces readers to one charming, hilarious, and Proverbs 31 woman by the name of Scharisse Freeman, who seems to be in a 1 vs EVERYBODY in the megachurch community. Determined, relentless, and fueled by a desire to fit in, Lady Freeman’s story shows us how confronting & choosing the truth will always be the key to true belonging.

In the final stretch of our book club selections for 2026 — here’s what the eclectics will be reading for October, November, and December 💚 Swipe through for more details on how to join us either virtually or in-person if you’re in Louisville, KY.

OCTOBER — ‘The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman’ by Deesha Philyaw
Lucky me, I was an early reader of this one over the summer and I instantly wanted to talk about it with the book club - so now I’m making my dreams come true! This debut is equal parts hilarious and constructive in the way we view megachurches, sexual wellness, and one woman’s desire to create space for herself in a patriarchal world.

NOVEMBER — ‘The Book of Chuck’ by LaToya Watkins
As a reader who has enjoyed Watkins previous work, I’m excited to read her newest multigenerational novel with everyone. The way Watkins handles delicate familial wounds and topics is something I’m quite fond of, so I’m eager to see how she incorporates the “burden” of clairvoyant powers that is passed down in this Texas family.

DECEMBER — ‘Ghalen: A Romance in Black’ by Walter Mosley
When we think of love, it is easy to jump to the thought of romantic pursuits, but I’ve noticed a shift in society that is beginning to revere love in all its forms. Ghalen seems to explore all that love is, so I’m super excited to read what Mosley has written of love, even down to its most painful aspects, with a Black man at its center.

september book club information ✨ we’re reading NEVER TELL A BLACK GIRL HOW TO BLACK GIRL by Amena Brown.

This collection invites us into Brown’s personal accounts of girlhood and womanhood: recounting various moments in time, processing universal concepts, and how growing up in the South has contributed to the woman she is today. Being Black is not a monolith, nor is being a woman, so I hope with each essay we listen to her experiences with compassion and find ourselves reminded of stories of our own.

🧘🏽‍♀️ IN-PERSON: Yoga & Discussion with @_thenorthstaryoga

Today isn’t just about one book club. It’s about the beautiful community of Black readers being built everyday.
& Idc what nobody say, its something powerful & beautiful about reading BLACK STORIES , with BLACK PEOPLE.
(crazy tail lil girl 🙄). 😂
🥹Sometimes a book is the thing that gets the conversation started… but the community is what makes you stay. 🖤

There are so many Black book clubs creating spaces for us to read, connect, debate, laugh, learn, heal, discover new authors, & keep classic literature alive. 👏🏾👏🏾 Whether it’s a Black women’s book club, a Black men’s book club, a virtual club, an in-person club, a tiny group of friends, or a community of thousands—find your people.
Find a club. Join something. 📣

Today, I want to highlight some of the Black book clubs doing the work. I promise I tried to include as many clubs as I could. If you see your club tagg them — if I missed one please drop it below.🫶🏾

And to my BWRT Book Club family … 🥹🩷
Thank you for allowing me to share this day with our cousin clubs!! 🤗With so many amazing clubs out here, YOU continue to choose us. You show up. You read with me. You make me read beyond self help 😂 You make space for one another. You have watched this little idea turn into something that has genuinely changed my life.

I will never take that for granted.

a novel that surprisingly healed me through tiny doses of dialogue, self-examination, and a reverence of the act & will to love.

Flooding the River by Kehinde Winful, the July @eclectixthebookclub pick, was a short but mighty depiction of one woman’s relationship with love, grief, and cultural nuance. The heart can break in a multitude of ways, only then to reconfigure itself into a stronger, wiser version after each encounter with sorrow. Winful’s storytelling shows us how much one can grow even when it hurts, and that there is always more love waiting to be experienced on the other side of loss.

Have I convinced you enough to add this one to your TBR yet? 🥹 it’s also available on kindle unlimited for the eclectics who want to start it immediately.
