Out today!

‘Held in the Dark’ has a dual meaning and reflects a period of time supporting a loved one through complicated health issues, learning the nuances of isolation, uncertainty and hope from both sides. During this time I was also listening to a lot of music from the worlds of Big Thief, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith etc, on the CD player in my 2009 Ford Fiesta and beginning to explore the guitar more, writing there alongside piano. The vision for this album stemmed a lot from that sound world and was brought to life last December over three memorable days in the studio with some of my friends. It’s probably my favourite album so far and I loved the whole process of making this one especially.

@charliestewartmusic - violin
@chrisamermusic - guitars
James Mackay - guitars
@fergusmccreadie - piano
@aliwatsonbass - bass
@hendodrums - drums
@tomgibbspiano - clarinet
Matt Carmichael - tenor saxophone, piano ,6)

All music written by Matt Carmichael
Co-produced by @boutwillismusic , Matt and band
Recorded in December 2025 by @garryslateroomstudio at Castlesound
Mixed by @euanburton
Mastered by @technologyworks
Supported by Creative Scotland
