Meet Abigail 👋

Abigail Lee is an Economics & CMDA major and part of our Mentor Spotlight!

Her advice for new students:
“Say yes to everything! Every opportunity opens a door, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there.” ✨ A “Mentor Spotlight” graphic from the College of Science featuring a smiling student standing between white columns outdoors with trees in the background. The student has long dark hair and is wearing a black blazer over a light-colored shirt. The design has a maroon background with “Mentor Spotlight” curved across the top and “College of Science” written vertically on both sides. At the bottom, an orange label displays the name “Abigail Lee” and “Economics & CMDA Major.”

Day 7–8 recap from Frankfurt: The past two days have been packed with presentations and lectures from the Deutsche Bundesbank. We also had our first project presentation day for the Humans of Europe project, where students shared insights from interviews with locals about tourism and explored how governments and the private sector can better support communities in preserving their culture, standard of living, and environmental sustainability.

One of the most interesting takeaways was seeing how perspectives differed among locals, whether they were residents living in the area or business owners whose livelihoods depend on tourism. Here’s a look at these activities in action!

Day 8 🇩🇪🏦✨Today, we visited the Geldmuseum and attended a lecture about the German central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank. During the lecture, we learned more about what the Bundesbank does and why central banks are important. They help keep prices stable, control inflation, and support the economy so that everyday financial systems run smoothly 📈. It was interesting to realize how much work happens behind the scenes just to keep the economy stable.

Day 7: Yesterday was our first project presentation day for the Humans of Europe project, where students had to interview locals about their perspectives on tourism and explore how we, as tourists, governments and the private sector, can better support local communities in maintaining their culture, standard of living, and environmental sustainability.

It is interesting to see how perspectives differ among different groups of locals, whether they are residents living in the area or business owners whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

We’ve arrived in Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪✨
Our first challenge was tracking down the city’s three famous pee statues, the boy, girl, and dog 😂. Then we visited the Atomium ⚛️, one of Belgium’s most recognizable landmarks, before exploring the Design Museum Brussels 🎨 and its impressive collection of furniture design.

A great start to our time in Brussels! 🇧🇪❤️

Day 4: We’ve officially arrived in Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪✨

Our first mission? Hunting down all three famous pee statues, the boy, the girl, and even the dog! Finding them felt like a fun little treasure hunt through the city streets.

Next stop: the Atomium ⚛️✨. Fun fact: it’s a giant model of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times! Originally built for the 1958 World Expo, it has become one of Belgium’s most iconic landmarks.

After that, we explored the Design Museum Brussels 🎨🪑 It’s amazing how something as simple as a chair can be transformed into a piece of art and innovation.

A fun-filled first day in Brussels, with plenty more adventures to come! 🇧🇪❤️

P.S. We also have to say goodbye to Bettina, our guide from the Netherlands. Thank you, Bettina, for guiding and supporting us throughout the journey! Your positivity, kindness, and infectious energy truly made a difference, and we’re so grateful for all the wonderful memories. Wishing you all the best and hoping our paths cross again someday. ❤️

☀️🇳🇱 Your daily dose of joy is here 🤗 Our final day in Amsterdam started the perfect way, journaling over breakfast.

Next, we visited the famous windmills of Zaandam! These iconic Dutch windmills are a symbol of the Netherlands’ rich history. For centuries, they powered industries such as sawing timber, grinding spices, and producing oils, helping fuel the Dutch Golden Age. Walking among these historic structures felt like stepping back in time! 🇳🇱⚙️

We then headed into downtown Zaandam to see the eye-catching Inntel Hotel. 🏨💚💙 This architectural masterpiece is designed to look like a stack of traditional Dutch houses, featuring nearly 70 house facades in various shades of green with striking blue accents. Its unique design blends modern creativity with classic Dutch architecture, making it one of the most photographed buildings in the Netherlands! 📸✨

The rest of the day was free time for everyone to explore Amsterdam one last time.

Tomorrow, we say goodbye to the Netherlands and hello to Belgium! 🇧🇪✨ Brussels is our next destination, and we can’t wait to see what adventures await.

On to the next journey! 😊 Stay tuned… 🌍✈️💙

📍 Study Abroad Day 2 🇳🇱

Today we visited Giethoorn, often called the “Dutch Venice.” This charming village is famous for its canals, beautiful thatched-roof houses, and the fact that many homes can only be reached by boat or footbridge. 🚤🏡

Fun fact: Giethoorn has over 180 bridges connecting its tiny islands, making it one of the most picturesque places in the Netherlands!

After Giethoorn, we headed to Urk, a small fishing village with a rich maritime history. We got incredibly lucky because our visit happened to coincide with Urk Day! 🎉 The whole town was celebrating, and so many people were dressed in traditional Dutch outfits. It felt like one giant community gathering.

The atmosphere honestly reminded me of a tailgate back in the USA, everyone was outside, laughing, singing, and enjoying the festivities together. And the funniest part? They absolutely love “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Hearing the entire crowd sing along made it feel like I was back in Virginia for a moment. ❤️

Such a cute and unforgettable day filled with beautiful sights, local traditions, and unexpected connections across cultures.
