I had a full-on conversation with my fear in the middle of a shadow rave.

I'm about to do some deep medicine work, and when I sat down to set intentions for it last week, one word kept turning up. Fear.

Not such a shock, really. Since leaving London for Brighton 5 years ago I've let go of a lot. Relationships. People. Jobs. Ways of living. Versions of me I didn't like and sure as shit didn’t need.

Every one of them hurt. And every time, fear got there first.

Because fear isn't trying to ruin your life. It's trying to protect it. What fills the hole if I let this part of me go? What happens if I do the thing that doesn't feel safe?

So at the shadow rave @ecstaticdancebrighton I stopped trying to dance it off. I let myself sit right in it. Uncomfortable AF to begin with. I gave the fear an invitation: I don’t need you taking care of me any more, so why not come out?

Then the really weird bit happened. I drew it out of me, spoke to it and danced with it. "You've done your job. You don't need to protect me anymore."

It didn't disappear. It just stopped driving. From bodyguard to dance partner, in one DJ set. 👯

Honestly, one of the most interesting and introspective dances I've had.

Remembering the joy! Somehow skipping arm to arm is one of the most fun things ever!! It’s hard not to smile when skipping, something about the bounce maybe…. a much used step in the traditional country dancing of the British Isles. Perhaps this movement reconnects us with our ancient heritage of these lands. 🌳🌳🌳

Is it still ecstatic if it’s dark?

Yes. And it’s even better if you drop something funny halfway through.

That's Bill Tribble's idea. He’s a resident at @ecstaticdance.uk in east London, and in a Q&A he did with @osarasound for our DJ course this week, he talked about shadow raves, dark electronic music, playing weird shit, not trying to please everyone and dropping The Muppets halfway through a techno set.

It made me realise conscious dance can sometimes be way too polite. I’m not sure if being musically polite is for me.

Here’s some of the darker music I really love:

Italo disco. New beat. EDM. Mad, slow techno. Dark and stupid jungle and drum&bass. Trippy, psychedelic, metronomic stuff. Whatever the fuck it is that Skrillex makes.

Properly freaky out-there tracks. And, yes, happy hardcore.

Some of my favourite ED moments:

Hearing something and going “WTF is THIS?!”
Looking round at people grinning at how filthy that bassline is.
Laughing like idiots.
Chasing each other round the room pretending to be animals.

For me, those moments are just as sacred as going deep and having your internal moment to yourself. It’s still medicine.

The dark. The light. The solemn. The silly. Same coin, different sides.

I’m looking forward to letting my dark side shine through.

Despite the increasing chaos, the violence, the hatred, the suffering and pain - there is a silent revolution.

This revolution won’t be televised, it will be felt in the heart ❤️‍🩹 A depth of love that can hold all of the unshed tears, that won’t look away in the face of injustice, a love that unites us.. it is bubbling up and blooming in many, and there’s a feeling in me that when one tastes the freedom of this love - they’d be foolish not to join 🦋

Diving deep into the design that made things the way they are today - diving for light.. a dismantling of a society that wasn’t built to hold the depths of feeling that comes with unity.. so that even in the darkness, we can breath and feel it all ❤️🫂

Behold... The Aftermovie 2026!

It feels like a lifetime ago already... but watching this shows just how much was felt and experienced.

We’ve just passed the autumn equinox, and this video takes us straight back to the very beginning of summer, to those long days on the land of Avalon, when we gathered and created something truly special together.

What an incredible field we created. A space where we could express ourselves so fully, move so freely, connect so deeply, and simply be.

The land of Avalon held us so gracefully. It gave us the space for so much magic, play, depth and discovery. And even now, months later, it only takes a few minutes of watching these images to travel right back there and bathe in the afterglow.

And the beautiful thing is, it’s not over :)

Tickets for Avalon Dance Odyssey 2027 are still in the first phase.

We can’t wait to return to these sacred lands and do it all again. A completely new adventure, waiting to unfold.
