Day 28 prompt of #septtextilelove26 is Place

One of my most favorite places is a week-long art workshop that I attend annually in June. I’ve been attending @shakeragworkshops for over 20 years. I’ve been nicknamed the “Shakerag Queen” by some of the friends I’ve met there.

The workshops are studio immersions in various topics—sometimes I take one in textiles, occasionally another discipline—examples are: kantha stitching, improv quiltmaking, natural dying, eco printing, book arts, shibori, mark-making, mixed media, deconstructive screen printing, rug hooking, and others. All with top artists in their fields! My roommate, whom I met there several years ago through the workshops we’ve taken together, calls it our annual “hippie art camp.”

Each year, friendships are renewed, new ones are made. We reconnect with and discover our art and ourselves. It’s a magical place. Spending time devoted to art is part of my life blood. My spouse [AKA the Shakerag Elf] gives me this workshop as a holiday gift. It’s the gift of time and place that continues to give back.

Closing reception for “To Tell A Yarn” is this Saturday, June 27 from 5 - 8 PM!

Our friends with @sewaneespokenword aptly called this show “a feast of color.” It’s also a feast of skill and superb storytelling.

We hope you can see this one before it’s gone! Join us at 74 W. College St, next to Cumberland Monuments.

We are still reveling in last night! The turnout blew us away! The arts community here on the mountain is strong and so welcoming. 🙏

Some of the artists in “To Tell A Yarn” had not met each other, and it was a joy introducing these talented folks to one another and to see their work in conversation.

SHOUT OUT TO ✨CHRISTI TEASLEY - @ecteasley co-curated the show with us, and her vision and rolodex brought this show to life. Her energy, creativity, and warmth are unparalleled. Monteagle is lucky to have her!

COME VISIT - @stephen.hutchins will be here every week day if you want to stop by. (Until our baby is born—any day now!) To make a weekend or after hours appointment, you can DM us or shoot us an email, soundingstonegallery@gmail.com.

STAY TUNED - For an announcement about an artist talk and extended show dates! 😉

We are excited to announce our spring exhibition, To Tell A Yarn: Stories in Fiber & Cloth!

🪡 Storytelling is one of humanity’s oldest traditions. In this exhibition, artists continue that legacy through cloth, yarn, and thread, honoring textiles as tools of reflection and restoration.

🧵 Featuring artists Margo Clongier, Rima Day, Zak Foster, Lauren Gregory, Meagan Hall, Jessica Wohl, Rena Wood

📅 The show will be up March 21 - May 16. Join us March 21st 5-8pm for an opening reception.

We are thrilled to have put this show together with Monteagle fiber artist and Shakerag director, Christi Teasley. With her knowledge of the craft and familiarity with regional fiber artists, she helped us put together a diverse collection of artists whose work reflects top-tier craftsmanship and invites conversation and storytelling.

Being an artist has so much to do with immersing myself in nature and in communities situated with an intentional relationship to the land around them, including craft schools like @penlandschool, @haystack_school, @andersonranchartscenter, @shakeragworkshops. Shakerag has been a part of almost half of my life. I’ve learned technical skills in the classroom, I’ve learned how to teach, but it’s also the conversations at the lunch and dinner tables with women who endeavored boldly and bravely through significant transitions that showed me that I could be a mother and an artist too.

The power of women in community around craft schools is a powerful thing. @jennisorkin writes beautifully about this in her book “Live Form: Women, Ceramics, and Community”. I’ve had so many amazing teachers there’s no way I could list them all here, so I will share a few images/shoutouts.
