“To Tell a Yarn: Stories in Fiber and Cloth” opens at Sounding Stone Gallery on Saturday, March 21 with an opening reception 5:00-8:00 central time. You are invited!! We adopted the name “Sissiboo Six” for our summer artist residency group working near the mouth of the Sissiboo River in Nova Scotia.

The name “Sissiboo” may have come from the Mi’kmaq word “Seboo” for “river”, although some say the name comes from the French words “six hiboux” which means six owls. The name Sissiboo was used for the whole Weymouth area until the 1800s. Now it remains the name of the river, and by association, Sissiboo Landing in nearby downtown Weymouth.

Mary Vaughan’s marvelous painting of six owls in slide #4 are portraits of our group. Guess who? We are identified in #5.🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉

We were lucky to spend the month of July at the Jenny Family Residency through Mary Vaughan’s Alma mater, the Maine College of Art and Design. We recently reconvened in Santa Rosa California for an exhibition, artist talk, and retreat.

This is the final weekend of our exhibition “Sissiboo Six” at the Backstreet Gallery in Santa Rosa, CA. The inimitable @maryvaughan1960 collected this cohort of six artists for an extraordinary artist residency in Nova Scotia, July 2025. Our February exhibition is work created and inspired by our time at the Jenny Family Residency, made possible by Mary’s alma mater, Maine College of Art + Design.
