Work begun on an extraordinary residency in Nova Scotia in July 2026 included drawings and hooked textiles. Wonderful to revisit the images over the following months, while resolving some pieces and starting a few fresh for a gathering of our artist cohort in February. Hooking wool in Nova Scotia, the heart of traditional rug hooking in North America, was a treat. Even better was meeting the rug makers of the local area, traveling to the Hooked Rug Museum of North America, and soaking up the landscape. These inspirations and further NS retro posts forthcoming, hopefully scattered with current happenings in the studio.

"Clearing" is inspired by our local forest, paintings of Canadian painter Emily Carr, and the prompts provided by @lizalpertfay in her marvelous class @shakeragworkshops in June, 2024. She provided the "poison" for inclusion, in this case hot pink. @chandler_n3 provided the sparkly Lurex organza!

Update: Sadly, Oct. 8, wet feltmaking class is canceled.
Cumberland Folk School is hosting a one day Introduction to Wet Feltmaking on October 8, 9:30-4:30 including lunch. Join me for basics of 2-D feltmaking with local wool from Summer Fields Farm in Monteagle. We'll make beautiful wool cloth, experiment with including naturally dyed roving and bits of cloth, threads, and sheer scraps. Join me! Visit @cumberlandfolkschool for details and to register.

Oh, so many works in progress to choose from! Here is one that is an experiment in connecting the dots between several ways of working - patching, hooking, and stitching with naturally dyed fabrics, vintage crocheted place mat and buttons. Maybe a single vertical piece? Maybe a diptych of two squares?

A night dream of a large collage piece inspired this sample. Gritty movement - with a few stable bold colors, and a few red patches... My sister, painter @noell.teasley_ says it's hard to create a piece from a dream because you have already made the work... 🌝 In this case, it is a fragment and already distant, it will likely morph further.

Day 2 - craft/discipline #septtextilelove

These small pieces are punch embroidered with cotton thread using an @ultrapunchneedle, a relatively new tool for me. Drawing is my discipline regardless of the media, lines and marks are the heart of the matter. These little works began with a simple grid structure and then lines, shapes, and color choices were improvised while stitching. @valdani_threads provides a luscious pallete.
First is 9"x9" reverse appliqued with flannel. The other three are 6"x6" approx.

Greetings! I am Christi and I am tickled to join #septtextilelove 2022 challenge. I am an artist educator and work primarily in textiles. My studio work includes stitching, printing, and dyeing on cloth. Recently, hooking rugs and punch needle embroidery have captured my attention.

I first participated in #septtextilelove in 2017 (@ecteasley) and loved meeting new textile friends from far and near. This 2022 #septtextilelove is the perfect jumpstart for my studio Instagram feed! Looking forward to sharing and seeing work, hearing stories and meeting new folks.
