Ever wonder what a day in the life of a graduate clinician looks like in the student-led head and neck cancer clinic?

This week, our graduate clinicians are putting their skills into practice through:

New patient evaluations
Counseling and education
Swallowing & voice therapy
Manual therapy
Lymphedema care

We’re committed to developing clinical competencies through evidence-informed practice. Our evaluation and treatment protocols are grounded in the best available research in head and neck cancer care.

Graduate clinicians also develop tools and resources to support clinical decision-making and consistency in care. Designed by students, for students.

By measuring outcomes throughout evaluation and treatment, we support both clinical decision-making and ongoing clinical research.

A day full of learning, collaboration, and meaningful patient care! 💙

Huge congrats to our group on their last day in the student led head and neck cancer clinic! They've completed over 150 hours of clinical services in swallowing, speech, and voice in just 16 weeks! Stay tuned…we’ve got another cool pair coming soon!

Bello! 🍌💛 Our Dysphagia class went full *Despicable Me* for an IDDSI potluck!

Each minion squad created a recipe for a different IDDSI level, then taught the class how to test and confirm it—no evil plans, just precise consistency checks 😄 We learned how tricky modifying foods can be, with ingredients, time, and temperature all changing the outcome. Even Gru would agree: presentation and flavor matter!

We also thickened liquids and saw how different thickening agents behave (minions were *very* serious about this). Huge thanks to the dietitian who joined us to share insights on diet modifications, tube feeding, and the RD’s role on the team.

Finished off by discussing how to make diet recommendations based on clinical findings. Bannanna! Such a fun, hands-on day! 💙

We had a great morning joining the ECU Health speech therapy coordinator, Dana Gribble, to represent head and neck cancer at the Quack Back at Cancer event. Attendees learned early symptoms and screening practice for over 15 types of cancer. Don’t forget to get yourself screened regularly! The key note from Dr. Qaidir: if your body seems different, it’s always worth a mention to your doctor. Early detection is the best defense.

We bet that you haven’t heard how impressed we are by our amazing students. We had undergraduate and graduate representation at the North Carolina Speech Hearing and Language conference today. Graduate students Marisa and Lydia presented their findings on a new approach to glossectomy speech treatment. Undergraduates Hannah and Jordan presented their updated findings on graduate clinicians’ dysphagia-related knowledge and competencies following a student-led clinic experience. Not only do these posters represent the hard work these students put into expanding this clinical research lab, they represent the incredible breadth of skills they develop through their experiences. Way to go!

We were pleased to host the prospective students who have been admitted to our Audiology and Speech Language Pathology programs, and their families, on campus this morning. We had the good fortune to show off CSDI’s classrooms, clinics and @eculaupus and meet with our program director and financial aid specialists.

Later, prospective students will be able to engage with a panel of current students and then participate in a research and clinical expo, meeting with faculty, researchers and student group leaders.

To our visitors, thank you for joining us today. We hope to welcome you back here very soon as you begin your journey to be part of North Carolina’s health care future.
