A spellbinding, inquisitive journey into the nature of the unseen for anyone as curious about the afterlife as they are about life, 'A Curious Presence: An Exploration of Ghosts and the People Who Haunt Them' by Margo MacDonald & Amal El-Mohtar is tonight's Featured #CanLit in-store! 💕🇨🇦📚👻

"Hauntings happen. But why? Are they caused by ghosts, or something else? What is a ghost, anyway? After centuries of ghost-hunting by experts and amateurs alike, are we any closer to knowing?

Like many, Margo MacDonald once believed that all hauntings were the work of restless spirits, but after two decades spent engaging with firsthand accounts of paranormal encounters — and having a few of her own — she has more questions than answers.

MacDonald asks: Why are we haunted by tragedy but not by joy? If a ghost lives in a house but no one experiences it, does it make a haunting? And what does our desire to believe in ghosts say about us?

With insight and humor, A Curious Presence explores the theories that have shaped MacDonald’s understanding of hauntings and the paranormal. Told through conversations with skeptics, sensitives, parapsychologists, investigators, and haunted-house dwellers — interwoven with vivid accounts of real experiences and visits to famously haunted locations — MacDonald proposes an unsettling idea: Perhaps it isn’t the places that are haunted, but the people who move through them. Perhaps we have more in common with ghosts than we think."

In this NBN episode, I speak with Chris Banks about his stunning poetry collection, The Bureau of Useless Splendor (ECW Press, 2026).

To listen in, go to by link and click my NBN host page.

Poet Chris Banks is immersed in what is wondrous and strange about human connection, pop culture, and most importantly, the elusive search for understanding and hope in an accelerating century marked by socioeconomic disparity and climate change.

Banks writes direct, accessible poems with strong allusions and 100% certified “fresh” images so seasoned poetry fans and those not accustomed to the genre can both find something to enjoy. He reminds readers that everyone needs “a bushel of smiles” or “a first aid / kit of laughing gas” to poison our anxieties with joy, and he does not shy away from difficult topics like toxic masculinity or mental health struggles. “Beauty is not beauty / without the ugliness surrounding it,” Banks says.

In Bureau of Useless Splendour, Banks lets his imagination roam across the science of DNA sequencing, internet memes, space-time physics, Canadian nationalism, a lunar discussion between Canadian poet Gwendolyn MacEwen and American poet Frank Stanford, and even reimagined fortune cookie “fortunes” — as if to illustrate that tucked away among the allusions to pop culture and Shakespeare, poems about Johannes Gutenberg and the Martian mountain Olympus Mons, there exists a dusty old office where the poet sits, creating vivid, delightful pieces and mischievous “invoices” dedicated to the beauty and wonder of this world.
Chris Banks is a Pushcart-nominated Canadian poet with eight collections of poems. He has won two national awards, and his poems have appeared across Canada and the United States. Banks runs The Woodlot, a Canadian poetry reviews and essays website. He lives and writes in Kitchener, ON.

We are entering the third and final week of the Witch of Willow Sound readalong and I am lagging behind the rest of the group. I started it exactly on time and I enjoyed it so much. I did all of the first week’s reading in the first day and a half. Not wanting to get ahead of everyone else, I paused my reading and vowed to come back to it when the next week of reading began. But then I picked up other books and I got distracted and I didn’t get back to this one at all this week.

The good news is that, if it continues at the pace it started, it shouldn’t be a problem for me to read the final two-thirds of the book before next Monday when the readalong is scheduled to wrap up.

If you are into a spooky, witchy story set on the East Coast of Canada, this one is for you and it isn’t too late to join us in the readalong. Message me and I’ll send you the link.

Thank you to ECW Press for the book and for putting on the readalong.

P.S. The Brown Butter Banana Bread from Nemesis is for real.

Publishers Weekly review:

This gritty and relentless dystopian novel from Tremblay (Off My Feet) posits a near-future world with an economy built on art.

Isobel “Izzy” Ker is a Purist artist, working in an archaic, bland style that makes her an enemy of the New Art Government and the Triggers, celebrated artistic leaders whose “gore-porn” creations are incredibly addictive, and who have cultlike followings of cruel lackeys called Hounds.

Living in the resource-poor Dumps outside the protective dome of rich Mahl City, Isobel struggles to survive and keep painting. When Hounds raid her hideout, she’s forced to join the Half-Lights, a crew of anti-art rebels and thieves determined to bring down the government.

The Half-Lights send Isobel into Mahl City as their spy
—but Isobel’s new life posing as a Trigger proves seductive, and when her friend and fellow rebel Joanie tries to help her, the danger only increases.

In an adventure that is twisty, cathartic, and extremely fast-paced, the two friends discover a new side to their world and themselves as they experience both the pleasures and horrors the art-worshipping city has to offer.

[…] There’s no denying its originality. Replete with mind-bending thrills and chills, this proves hard to look away from. (June)

Our Infinite and Inevitable Ends by A.D. Sui
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this! A perfect blend of cli-fi and sapphic entanglements. It’s really smart, but also emotionally charged.

It has a lot of cool science in it, like plastic-dissolving fungi, and a drug that allows users to view alternate timelines of the multiverse. It may destroy your brain long-term, but why wouldn’t people want to? This near-future Earth has been devastated by climate change with a never-ending drizzle of acid rain.

I love how complex the characters are, that they are mainly women, that they are scientists; I love what they’re willing to give up for each other, how stubborn they are, and that each is in pursuit of what they think is right.

I need to check out A.D. Sui’s other books now!
Many thanks to ECW Press @ecwpress for the book—pub date is October 27th

I first saw @chantalkrev perform in Montreal when I was around 19, and she probably wasn't much older. Even then, her talent was incredible, and I was struck by how natural and down to earth she was when engaging the audience. This was long before the word "authentic" was thrown around so liberally.

In a full circle moment, I'll be seeing her perform again in Montreal - 30 years later - in November. I can't think of a better way to mark my 50th.

I'm so enjoying the book she's co-written with the love of her life and creative partner @Rainemaida (We even share the same publisher- @ecwpress).

I can't imagine how hard it must be to stay grounded throughout a career as successful as theirs, but somehow these two have 💜
