Eddy Bennett (@eddyartist) paints every sign backwards, on the back of the glass ✨

The Brighton-based artist works with glass and gold, mixing Victorian sign-making techniques with a bold pop art style. He discovered reverse glass gilding in 2015, and later trained one-on-one with master glass artist David Smith MBE in brilliant cutting and traditional mirror silvering.

The whole process happens in reverse. He cuts and engraves the glass on a spinning stone wheel, etches patterns with acid, then lays down real gold leaf so thin it floats on the slightest breath. Every letter, outline and shadow is painted by hand on the back of the glass, in mirror image, and in the opposite order to a normal painting. The details go on first and the background last, because what's painted first is what you see on top from the front.

In this video you can see pieces like a gold and glass Oasis mirror and a huge, colorful sign full of palm trees, oranges, mushrooms and glowing lettering. Only when the glass is turned around can you see if every layer worked 🏆

It's a craft that was once found on old pub windows and shop fronts, and he's keeping it alive one sign at a time.

Slightly delayed gratification for this experience as I pack the contents of my home (and understand minimalism so much more).

I’ve been to @pilchuckglassschool as a student, instructor and AA since 2005, but this class with @eddyartist, @pasqualeartist, @lynesandco and @zucchininoodlesandbeef in reverse painting, gilding and brilliant cutting was a real game changer. The session brought together an incredible amount of talent, and I feel so lucky I got to be part of the experience.

I’m late to the timeline lovefest for @pilchuckglassschool Session 5 Reverse Glass Gilding class but it’s no less heartfelt.

Despite having an entire year of sabbatical ahead of me, I already know this workshop is the pinnacle of my sabbatical. In my tenth trip to Pilchuck, I returned to being a student for the first time since 2001. How lucky I am to be introduced to this trifecta of glass, gold, and typography—longstanding obsessions—from a wholly different perspective and history.

To the *outrageously* generous teaching team of @eddyartist @pasqualeartist @lynesandco @steffilaidanegg @zucchininoodlesandbeef, I have truly not fallen this hard for a material or a process since I first touched glass at age 15. There’re no thank-you’s large enough to capture the magnitude of this gift. (But THANK YOU!!!! 🥹)

To my classmates @jocelynchan_art @deshontyau @mwoosta @glaskunst_hamburg @isaac.kozlovskis @jimmy_anderegg @meganstelljes @joannamanousis @kirsten.m.bauer @sallydonuts @willcox.studio @misterhong1 a total honor to learn with, beside, and from you. Thanks for being the best company I could have asked for; old friends and new.

To staff and seasonal crews that make @pilchuckglassschool happen, as well as everyone on campus: 👏 🙏 ♥️ 🔥
