@dorset_divide 2026 - behind the scenes

It takes a lot to organise a grassroots cycling event, let alone running an ultra: supporting people to safely ride silly distances on little or no sleep.

@harrywhiles is the lovely mind behind the DD and you wouldn’t believe how much he does himself to make this event happen, and happen in the most inclusive and joyful way.

It was a pleasure to help behind the scenes this year and see exactly what it takes to run an event like this. Answering endless messages and questions, keeping checkpoints running for over 24hrs, clearing brambles, chasing riders with cameras, and closely dot-watching nearly 100 riders - for safety, fairness and storytelling - over 4 days.

On top of that Harry commits to welcoming in every single rider, whatever the hour. He greets everyone with a hug and the same level of enthusiasm - the perfect embodiment of why he created the Dorset Divide: to create space for different experiences and ensure everyone feels part of this special community.

If you love grassroots racing, consider volunteering to support delivering it. Lots of these events are only possible because people commit their time and resources to making them happen.

I thought I’d be more jealous of the riders, but being part of the crew was its own adventure with the best camaraderie. Thanks for a great weekend @harrywhiles @paisleys_adventures @eddypearce @cambercycleworks

This Sunday - 12th July - local photographer Eddy Pearce @eddypearce will be offering a photo portrait session in The Lyric as a thanks to anyone who makes a donation to our Under This Roof Crowdfunder campaign (link in bio!).
In recent years Eddy has used The Lyric as the backdrop to several beautiful portraits of local people including a very special photo of our team as we emerged from lockdown in 2020. He seems to have the knack of nailing beautiful and powerful portraits in our equally beautiful space.
Yes, we know… you may be far too modest to have your own portrait hanging on your wall, but there’s usually someone out there who would just LOVE that. A perfect gift for a parent, grandparent, lover, your greatest fan, or just for a Lyric Lover! Eddy promises to do his best to make even the most nervous of sitters feel at ease.
The photos will also be a great record of some of our supporters, and we hope that you will share them with pride to help to spread the word about our Crowdfunder as it moves into its final stage.
The sessions on Sunday will be open from 11am until 3pm and will run on a first come first served basis. You are very welcome to bring friends, family, dogs, props, or any other items close to your heart.
We’d like to suggest a minimum donation of £20. In return you will receive an emailed copy of at least one portrait.
If your donation is £40 / £60 or more, you will also receive an A4 / A3 print of one portrait on beautiful Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl paper. *
If your donation is £60 or more, you will also receive an A3 print of one portrait on beautiful Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl paper. *
* Prints to be available for local collection from Monday 20th July. Postage by additional arrangement.

What a moment!
An atmosphere only words can capture.
Three years ago Reuben and I were at @bridlitfestival in the same room with the same chair @sophy_roberts

Sophy drew a link between these two events so skillfully weaving Reubs into the conversation. He stole the limelight.

I knew that a conversation with Sophy was going to be powerful. “Look me in the eye if you start to cry,” she told me before. There were several moments when I had to hold her gaze and breathe through the words.

With 100 + people in the room we spoke of love & loss, deceit & truth, faith and the loss of it, suicide & abuse, loneliness and the freedom nature brings.

I don’t think anyone will ever forgot that hour. It was a “moment” for #bridport. Deep truths were opened. Truths that sit uncomfortably it’s us at first until we turn to face them.

@littletollerbooks were in the room - where it all began. Reubs stood up to take a bow and spoke with a clear and loud voice. He has come so far that it bowls me over with pride.
