This is a vulnerable post.

Last night, I went to my first Hip Hop class in a few years and honestly, I’m still obsessing over the fact that I didn’t finish the routine.

I keep having to remind myself:

1. I’m not a dancer 😂
2. IT’S OKAY NOT TO GET IT
3. Give yourself grace

There were so many moments during class when I felt slow. I kept wondering, “Why aren’t my brain and body connecting?” I was beating myself up in my head, feeling like I was slowing the class down and even worrying that the other ladies were getting aggravated with me which was far from the truth!

They encouraged me, hyped me up, and were incredibly patient. For that, I’m truly grateful.

I’m learning that Renee’s need to show up with everything together and figured out is a trauma response and honestly, it shows up in every area of my life.

Constantly believing that I have to show up a certain way stems from being criticized throughout my childhood. I often felt like I couldn’t do anything right. Now, at this big age, it still makes me cringe to watch myself get lost in a routine and leave class feeling like I didn’t accomplish anything.

But the Lord continues to remind me:

Showing up is the accomplishment.

Continuing to try is worth celebrating.

I showed up and honestly, I had a great time! I moved, I sweated, and the ladies were hilarious and so much fun.

I needed that time of movement and connection. I didn’t need to master the routine.

Now, next week she’s adding on to it…so I do need to practice! 😂

I’m grateful that my body can still move.
I’m grateful for grace and the freedom not to have it all together.
I’m grateful for a safe space like @serenityartscenter where I can have fun, learn, and experience breakthrough.

I may not have mastered the routine, but I showed up.

And that is worth celebrating. 💛
