“Street and documentary photography are at the heart of what I do. I’m drawn to everyday life and the stories happening around us, especially the small moments that are easy to miss. I like to get close to people, look for unusual angles and find something interesting in the ordinary. It’s a way of looking that I take with me into everything I photograph, whether I’m walking the streets, working on a documentary project or shooting an assignment.” - @edxsnaps

Hard light, deep shadow, and whatever survives in between 🖤

Photographer Spotlight: Eline Deckers @edxsnaps

Eline Deckers shoots Antwerp with the contrast turned all the way up. Her black and white street photography is built on extremes: figures reduced to clean silhouettes, commuters smeared into ghosts, a single wedge of sun cutting someone out of a concrete wall. Every so often a frame keeps its color, and it lands like someone turning the lights on.

She is not interested in showing you everything. Leaving half the frame in darkness is how she decides what deserves to be seen, and she would rather stand close with a wide lens than hide across the street with a zoom. There is real warmth under all that noir too: a cat in a window, a stack of dead televisions, a kid running along a wall against an enormous sky.

It’s been a while 😃 (read until the end ❤️)

Between packing, moving, and chasing the eclipse, my wife and I went on a little adventure. @edxsnaps had never been on an astro shoot before, so it felt like the perfect excuse.

To be honest, it had been a long time since I’d done this myself. I’ve put photography on the back burner for a while because I feel I can express more and tell better stories through my music as @tatawa.music . But every now and then I miss one of the things I loved most back when photography was a big part of my life: shooting the night sky.

So we headed out to catch the Perseid meteor shower.

And, as expected after being out of the game for so long, I got a few things completely wrong 😃 We arrived around midnight while the peak was actually around 4–5 AM. I was also convinced I had picked the right direction to shoot… turns out I hadn’t 🤷‍♂️😂

Still, I managed to catch two small meteors on camera. But the best moment wasn’t in any photo. We both saw an absolutely huge meteor streak across the sky, completely out of frame. We just stood there, amazed, happy that we got to witness and share that moment together.

I have to admit: I miss photography. And I think once we’re settled in Spain, I’ll be picking up the camera more often again. Better night skies, better landscapes, and a lot more opportunities than Belgium.

You’ll definitely be seeing more of this in the future.

Canon 5ds, 16-35mm at 2.8, iso 600, 30s. Merged 3 shots (1 foreground with a guy on bike passing by, 2 and 3 are the shootings stars. #astrophotography #perseidmeteorshower #couplegoals
