Since I couldn’t find any live western Pygmy’s in Oklahoma to post here’s a Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri) from South Florida. I hadn’t turned up a Pygmy rattlesnake since 2023 and really didn’t have any good opportunities to look for them either, so it was nice to finally see one again. I figured we would have a good chance at finding one on a specific stretch of road right before sunset and even told @eknowsnature “we are gonna get a Pygmy first snake.” Sure enough right at sunset it was crossing. We maybe spent 3 minutes tops with this snake. It was on a decently busy stretch of road and the mosquitoes were absolutely horrible. We were really hoping we could get a big edb but at least we were able to tick off the smallest rattlesnake species in the world.

The North American Racer (Coluber constrictor) has been one of the more common snakes I have been able to turn up this year. However, they are not snakes to overlook. They can be quite variable in color from yellow to blue to black. These snakes are pretty common and can be found all across the United States. Like their name suggests they are really fast and can be pretty fun and challenging to catch.

Prairie Kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster) flipped under a roadside board. After driving 3 hours and finding one dead rat snake @eknowsnature @traveling_world_of_reptiles and I spotted a board on the side of the road. With no expectations we flipped the board and were shocked to find two prairie kings taking shelter underneath.
