Soft life with some hard hikes

Street photography for me is among the most difficult genres. As a landscape photographer, I’m accustomed to a slower process of planning and deliberation.

Capturing the bustling, vibrant streets of Hoi An demanded a different approach. Quickly adapting to changes in the environment and building compositions on the fly was vital.

Here are some of the images I’m really proud of so far.

My little boy can’t yet appreciate the vastness of the night sky. How the silence of a starry night has its own unique sound. Time moves in a special way in the middle of the night.

Thanks to @tinyawayescape, we were able to share our love for stargazing with our son, under the spectacular dark skies of the Grampians.

One of the most wonderful aspects of my mother-in-laws personality is that from the start, she indiscriminantly treated me like her own son. When Nazia and I would have a tiff, she wouldn’t treat either of us differently.

After one of these little tiffs, she told me that although Nazia can be stubborn, little things make her very happy.

That was a decade ago.

We celebrated 6 years as a married couple recently. Every day, I find what ma said to be consistently true. Little things make her so happy. Like a coffee in the morning or a sunset in the backyard. Little things make her smile. And she never forgets to go the extra mile when it comes to small acts of kindness for others.

As someone who is at times very preoccupied with self, I’ve learnt a lot from this aspect of her over the years.

My son is very lucky to grow up with a role model like his mum.

We did The Razorback hike over 2 days, starting at Diamantina Hut through to Federation campground (~11km).

Federation campground is only about 2km from the Mt. Feathertop summit, where we started our day with the sunrise. It is possible to camp on the summit too, but windy conditions meant this time it was not possible. The hike back to Diamantina Hut took about 3.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

From start to finish, The Razorback features incredible panoramic views of the alpine mountainscape. The walk is moderately challenging, but comfortably doable as a day hike.

One thing I was ill-prepared for were the swathes of March flies - an issue exacerbated in the summer months. These are large with a painful bite (that at worst, can cause an anaphylactic reaction). Bug sprays with DEET and picadin can be used to reliably repel these pests.

I’ll post a link to a checklist covering the equipment we carried at some point this week.

Some photographs from our recent hike up to the Cradle Mountain summit.

We intended to smash out the epic 6-day Overland track this trip, but some health-related issues meant that this was no longer possible.

Regardless, the summit walk certainly scratched the itch for a scenic challenge.

We took our time, savouring the incredible views along the way.

Wish I ditched the heavy pack at the base of the final summit incline though! There are some fairly steep scrambles at the end requiring a vertical climb.

A weekend spent winding down on the sapphire coast. We explored Merimbula and the quaint, charming coastal towns in the surrounding area on bikes hired locally.

Some places we really enjoyed:

- Merimbula to Pambula coastal track (shared walk and bike path)
- Merimbula lake and boardwalk
- Valentina restaurant
- Pambula beach
- The Pinnacle walking track for sunrise
- Boyd tower in Eden for sunrise/stargazing
