Published in March, a @nytopinion piece exploring “Muskism”, and how Elon Musk’s growing empire is blurring the lines between private business, technology and government power!

✒️Quinn Slobodian & Ben Tarnoff🖋️

I illustrated #ElonMusk holding the wires that feed power between the Capitol, the Pentagon and the White House. You may see the power strips form an X, turning this messy web of connections into the symbol of Musk’s expanding grip.

I had fun drawing these iconic buildings with my signature bumpy treatment. And, of course, Musk’s funny-looking face, it’s so easy to draw these guys haha

Many thanks to @elanaschlenker for giving my pulsating style so much room to play ! ;)

Hi! For those who are new here: we are Tractor Beam, a sci-fi mag dedicated to radical visions rooted in soil.

And we’re Claire and Lana. We met a decade ago working at VICE on science, tech, and impact. Since then, there’ve been dogs, jobs, moves, breakups, marriages, kids, global pandemics…but we’ve remained forever friends and collaborators through it all.

The seed of Tractor Beam was planted long ago when we got obsessed with the idea of optimistic climate fiction. At VICE, we were surrounded by people striving to do the impossible, and young people demanding a better future. But there was a gap between the hope we could see and the despair we could feel. How could we tip the odds without a shared (funky, sexy, aspirational!) vision of tomorrow?

Nearly a decade later, in a true full circle moment, we got the opportunity to try. @drinktractor, a farmer-founded organic beverage company working to change the foodservice industry from the soil up, came to us with a provocation: could we build a culture around restoring and preserving soil health for the long term?

The seed germinated.

We believe stories shape our future, and planet-scale challenges require planet-scale culture shifts. Not many companies fund sci-fi; just those who understand that you have to imagine something before you can build it.

We started calling it soilpunk, not because the world needs more punks, or because we’re necessarily inventing something new, but because we could feel an energy already growing that deserved its own genus and species.

To us, soilpunk means looking to Earth as the foundational ‘technology’ for worldbuilding. It sees humans as just one part of the biosphere, and therefore looks systemically at human impact and agency. Where our close cousin solarpunk foregrounds human-made technology, soilpunk broadens the scope–in who we’re solving for, where solutions come from, and what a better tomorrow might look like. Soilpunk is a little dirtier, a little swampier; it is the messy work of turning death into life and back again.

But that’s just what we think.

What does soilpunk mean to you? Tractor Beam is a platform for you to show us.

After 6 months and 274 drawings, I’m happy to finally show you the @a24books book, which was just released. I had the chance to draw a lot of movies that I love, practice drawing Nicolas Cage’s face several times, and draw tomatoes from Rohmer’s « Le Rayon Vert ».

Thank you so much @elanaschlenker, @whoremonе and @a24books for the trust 🙏
