nêwo nipâkwêsikowin tastawayihk-iyiniwak wâhkôhtowin êkwa kitimakêyihtowin * again & again, I am humbled and grateful for this community that has become family over the last five years. I still remember showing up a bit blind that first year of fasting camp, meeting our two nohkomwak chiefs for the first time, supporting what would soon become the most incredible 2Spirit ceremonial community one could ask for. we did it! four years of sundance and we had our first give away. some dancers couldn’t be there and they were missed. their spirits still with us as we danced and prayed and did such good healing, together. I appreciate our integration time too. gathering in the garage to sing our hearts out in wild and wondrous ways, reminds me of my childhood singing simple tunes at a campfire with family. we always made it work, and we continue to commit to the songs. this year we also got to feast our voices and drums as 2Spirit relatives inside and at the arbour, which was a huge step towards reclaiming our roles and carrying these practices forward. no words to express those shivers felt by all. humbled to get to assist, to witness, to learn and grow with all these relatives, and to be an oskapêwis for kohkoms Barbara Bruce and Charlotte Nolin, as well as kohkoms Pahan & Kaweah, you’ve given us all such a generous gift of finding our way home in ceremony. kinanâskomitinâwaw * kisâkihitinâwaw love you all 🦬🦅⭕️🔥

Haŋyétu Šá (Red Night) celebrates Indigenous excellence, community, and a night of unforgettable music, movement and connection at the Painted Lady Friday August 14.  Lancelot Knight will start the night with his powerful voice and masterful guitar skills, Lancelot’s live performance is an electrifying fusion of music and storytelling, with original songs spanning genres from soulful ballads to high-energy anthems.  Next award winning and losing performance artist Bee Solomon will commune with what hasn’t yet been said in the room; reflecting what should and should never have been, with his enigmatic movements and entrancing energy. Closing the night Cliff Cardinal & The Sky-Larks consider themselves to be genre-free, unwilling to let the bounds of one musical lane contain them. Honed by a hilarious and nefarious style, the band produces protest songs, love ballads, and existential raps through an Indigenous lens. The night continues with burlesque featuring the dynamo duo Thrasher and El Toro on bartop dancing to the beats and vibes of DJ 9teen90. So get your bannock butts on the dance floor for a night of non stop entertainment and good times!

🌀MIX IT UP! Some of my fave artists make something happen at my 72RHR album release party LOVE STREAMS: Cascade of Art Provocateurs Fri. June 26. Doors: 7:15PM Starts 8PM Karen Ng, a pillar of T.O. experimental music & seasoned saxophonist, creates a live music score to poets: Lee Suksi, Stevie Manning, and dancer Bee Solomon. Poet Lee Suksi moves with deep intelligence, sensuality, and love for life. Stevie Manning expresses clarity through raw poetry that cuts to the core. Visionary Dancer Bee Solomon transforms how people view dance. Presented by @projectnowherefest @thebabygtoronto. An astonishing array of multimedia artists bound by affection and care during Pride. Dress-up is welcome if you wanna! 🌞🌈 🎫TIX Link in bio🎟️ Video: music from Karen Ng's album Backwards Blue, digital billboard by Colby Richardson and 📸 by Green Yang, Bee Solomon #research, Stevie Manning 📸 Greg Trumper, excerpt of Lee Suksi from the documentary WHERE HAVE ALL THE POETS GONE? by Sook-Yin Lee. BIOS: Toronto-based improviser Karen Ng has established herself as a unique musical force nationally and internationally, performing with some of Canada’s most prized artists and collaborates regularly with ad hoc ensembles in the wider improvising scene across Canada, in Europe and the US. Stevie Manning is a poet from Toronto. Her poems have been featured in Angel Scum Press and @mtf_butches. Her poems were solicited by the Canadian Medical Association, but rejected after closer examination. Her chapbook Joan Would Say was released by KFB in 2023. Bee Solomon, of Anishinaabe and Irish heritage, was born in remote Shebahonaning, a small First Nations community in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Bee grew up without internet, cable television or much outside influence which informed a style of dance that careens between synergy and conflict, pushing deeper into his artistry.
