What if knowing you could stop at ANY time actually made it easier to stay present during intimacy and allow for authentic desire to emerge?

One of my favorite tools for taking pressure off intimacy is something I call a **pivot list**.

Before you’re in an intimate moment, decide together:

What can we shift to if one of us needs to pause or stop for any reason?

Maybe it’s cuddling. Making out. Going for a walk. Watching a movie. Talking. Or some alone time.

You can even agree on a verbal AND nonverbal way to communicate “pause.”

The point isn’t to perfectly predict what you’ll need.

It’s to make changing your mind expected, welcomed, and easy—rather than something you have to negotiate for the first time when your nervous system is already activated.

**You can pause at any time. You can change your mind at any time. And intimacy doesn’t need penetration or orgasm to “count.”**

🎙️ This is just one piece of a much bigger conversation about trauma, the nervous system, intimacy, and creating more safety around connection. The full conversation will be on the @elementqhealingcenter podcast soon.

Staff Highlight: Dr. Sarita Shah 💊❤️‍🩹

Having our psychiatrist, Dr. Sarita Shah, on-site every day is something we deeply value. Many of the individuals we serve have experienced trauma and may carry medical distrust or uncertainty about medication. Access to in-person, face-to-face psychiatric care creates real opportunities to build rapport, trust, and have open, collaborative conversations about treatment.

Dr. Shah is incredibly personable, and her clinical insight matters so much to our clients and our team. She brings warmth, compassion, humor, and light into a space where healing happens every day. Her expertise in medication management pairs with genuine care for each person she meets.

Dr. Shah, we are so grateful for you! Thank you for showing up each day with your knowledge, kindness, and smile.

A lack of affirming and loving care continues to impact San Diego’s LGBTQ+ youth mental health today amid political actions aimed at rolling back civil rights.

In the first four months of this year, 41 kids, teens and young adults joined North County LGBTQ Resource Center programs, Project Youth Manager Claire Williams said. That includes the center’s four weekly social support groups with options for those of different identities and age-specific groups for people ages 9 to 30. Williams said this is a “significant” increase compared to previous months.

Correction: An earlier version of this post had incorrect phone numbers on slide 8.

Community over everything! We had the pleasure of welcoming the incredible teams from Monima and Element Q to our Solana Beach office for an afternoon of connection and conversation. Days like these are why we do what we do! Building a trusted circle of professionals so our clients always feel held, supported, and in good hands no matter where their journey takes them. Thank you both for showing up, for the work you do, and for being such a safe space for our community. We are so grateful. 😊🙌

Every now and then, you meet a group of people who truly inspire you—people who lift, support, and motivate others to grow. Sometimes those paths cross in the most unexpected ways, and something really special happens. I had such a great time with the folks at @monimawellness & @elementqhealingcenter earlier this week. Cheers to friendship and great music.

Uplifting the LGBTQ+ community isn’t something we talk about. It’s something we live out every single day. 🌈

For so many queer people, finding spaces that feel safe, affirming, and truly understanding can be life-changing. Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in community. It happens when you’re seen, heard, and supported exactly as you are — without having to shrink, explain, or apologize for your identity.

This work is about creating real pathways to healing for queer people navigating mental health, substance use, and everything that comes with simply trying to survive in a world that hasn’t always made room for us. It’s about turning pain into connection, fear into hope, and one day into day one.

You deserve care that honors your whole self.
You deserve community that shows up.

And you deserve a future rooted in joy, pride, and possibility.
This is what queer-affirming recovery looks like.
And we’re just getting started. 💖🌈
